Andy's Story
I began attending Kent State in the fall of 1968, but quit after the summer term following the shootings. I had majored in Physics, Mathematics, English, and Philosophy (not all at once). But after a traumatic breakup with my first love and what my father called a "metaphysical crisis," I saw no point in staying in school. I moved to a communal farm in W.Va., and pursued enlightenment as a student of zen master Richard Rose. After 9 years of this and doing other things, (stockboy/cashier, roofer, mail carrier, stained glass artisan, salesman), I returned to college, this time U. of Akron. I started there in Mechanical Engineering, but switched after one term to Mathematics, and earned a B.S. in that subject in 1983.
Learning that UA would PAY me to be a grad assistant, I continued there for 2 more years, eventually earning an M.S. in Mathematics in 1987 (It took me 3 years of dilly-dallying to write my Master's paper on Nonstandard Analysis.)
In Fall, 1984 I began work on a PhD in Mathematics at Northeastern University in Boston. I attended classes both there and at nearby MIT. My PhD advisors were first, Robert Case of Northeastern, and later Aki Kanamori of Boston University. My focus of study was Foundations (Set Theory and Mathematical Logic). I eventually transferred to Iowa State University to complete my PhD in Mathematics in the summer of 1988. My Advisor was the late Math artist Alexand...Expand for more
er Abian. My thesis was entitled "Topology Posets and an Unramified Symmetric Model for ZFC." I have published six papers, three jointly with Dr. Abian.
Since Fall, 1988 I have been teaching Mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have taught at U. of Akron, Rose-Hulman (in Indiana), Morehead State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Transylvania University, Sullivan University, Lexington Community College, the University of Kentucky, and Kentucky State University, (the last 7 are all in Kentucky). I also have taught undergraduate Statistics, and I taught Astronomy one term at Lexington Community College. I have also given more than 70 presentations at professional society conferences, including 5 on astrophysical topics. (I was a research Fellow at NASA in Greenbelt MD in summer, 1994, which led to a three-year association with NASA through their JOVE grants (JOint Venture in Education)
I met the woman who would become my wife while we were both grad students in math at U of A. We married in 1985, and have remained married. We have three sons. My wife is an immigrant from Indonesia (though a US citizen now for 25 years), and we have gone twice for extended stays there, in Hong Kong, and in Singapore. I don't like flying, but I enjoyed being there.
Susan taught math for years, but got fed up in 1996, and switched careers. She has been programming for the past decade.
