Andy's Story

Life I am married to the former Martha McShan (Vestavia Hills High School 1978; Birmingham-Southern classes of 1982 and 1985; UAB class of 1987) for twenty-four years. I have two daughters, Ashton (16) and Lindsay (14). One spunky black pug named Aristotle, serves as the house pet. I hold five academic degrees (two bachelors, two masters, and one post-masters degree). My work history includes chemist, research scientist, State Director of Rehabilitation Counseling, Birmingham Regional Director and State Technical Advisor for the Alabama Eye and Tissue Bank, and Elementary Teacher. Currently, I have taken two years off from teaching to develop two children's books that cover enviornmental science and three-dimensional mathematics involving Platonic and Archimedian Solids. I plan a return to the teaching field within the near future. My transition from working in the public and private sector to teaching fulfills a "calling" per se in providing assistance to children in order for them to reach their full academic and social potential. Our family currently resides in Lutz, Florida, which is a suburb of Tampa. The horse stables, pool, spa, and lake behind our home provides plenty of adventure and relaxation. Since our move to Tampa, I have added three largemouth bass to join others on my home office wall of fame. Hopefully, the elusive ten pound Micropterus salmoides floridanus will soon join this select group. My daughters, Ashton and Lindsay, both attend Sickles High School in Tampa. Ashton is a junior, while Lindsay began her high school career this summer. Ashton became a member of the high school's National Honor Society this past year as a sophomore. Ashton enjoys fashion, volunteering, and serves on The Sickle's High School Yearbook Committee. Ashton hopes to attend Florida State or Florida and become a pharmacist. Lindsay, on the other hand, wishes to become a veterinarian. Having volunteered throughout the summer in a local veterinarian clinic, she presently works three days per week after school and on Saturday. She plays both the violin and alto saxophone in the school's orchestra. This past year she was inducted into the National Honor Society for at Martinez Middle School. She represented her middle school as their Spelling Bee Champion and placed eleventh in the Tampa Spelling Bee. She enjoys horseback riding, reading the classics, aerobic exe...Expand for more
rcise, and listening to classical music. As a vegetarian, we maintain an updated supply of fruits and vegetables. She aspires to attend Cornell and become a veterinarian. We are, indeed, blessed to have such wonderful children!!! My wife Martha serves as senior consultant for a national health care agency. She travels frequently, but remains steadfast in serving as a great role model for our children. Proving to be the best friend that a man could ever wish to have, we began dating during my senior year at Birmingham-Southern College and married six months later. We are working on our twenty-fifth year of marriage. Time sure does fly!!! In essence, life is great!!! Workplace Wastewater Chemist; Research Scientist in Urology and Spinal Cord Injuries involving both paraplegic and quadriplegic patients at The Spain Rehabilitation Center at UAB; Statewide Director of Homebound Rehabilitation Program for the State of Alabama; State Technical Director and Birmingham Regional Director for The Alabama Eye and Tissue Bank. Served as a member of the Eye Bank Association of America's evaluation team for member eye banks. I was a member of The Downtown Optimist Club in Birmingham for fourteen years. While serving in the Optimist Club I chaired the annual High School Essay Contest on Good Citizenship. I also held the office of Vice President of Administration and was the youngest member in the club's history to serve on the Board of Directors. I also participated in the annual Salvation Army Kettle Program each Christmas season. Feeling called to serve the educational needs of younger children, I left the transplant industry and enrolled in the Master's program in education at Samford University. After completing my master's degree, I became an enrichment teacher at Bluff Park Elementary School in Hoover, Alabama. I also served as a fourth and fifth grade teacher. While teaching at Bluff Park, I served as the advisor and manager of Bluff Park's Broadcast Studio for the school. Following our families move to Tampa in March, 2004, I decided to work on two manuscripts, hopefully for publication. These manuscripts deal with educational topics encompassing Plato's Solids and The Arthurian legend of the round table and suburban encroachment and potential harm threatening a residential pond and it's ecosystem. I plan to reenter the teaching field withing the next year.
