Andrew's Story
Life
Born in Germany in 1945, I immigrated with my family to the USA in 1949. We stayed briefly in New York City and eventually settled in Detroit. I attended Priest Elementary School and Chadsey High School. I dropped out of high school in 1962 to join the U.S. Army. I served 3 years on active duty (1962-1965) stationed at Ft. Knox, KY; Ft. Dix, NJ; Turley Barracks, Mannheim, Germany; Ft. Wayne, MI and 5th Army HQ, Chicago, IL. After being released from the Army in 1965 I got married in 1966 and began working for Ford Motor Co at the National Parts Distribution Center in Livonia in 1967. During that time I had 2 children (Michael & Tina Marie) and 4 grandchildren. I was divorced in 1989. Since my divorce I've lived in Farmington Hills and Wixom. I currently live in Wyandotte.
In 1975 I joined the Michigan Army National Guard and in 1985 I switched to the U.S. Army Reserve. I retired from the Army in 1995.
School
I graduated from Priest Elementary School in Spring of 1959 and started Chadsey High School in the fall of that year, enrolled in Chadsey's Commercial Arts program. After 3 years of incarceration with negligible progress and having taken up permanent residence in th...Expand for more
e 10th grade, my teachers, counselor (Mr. Kizel) and I, along with local law enforcement decided that school may not be my my best career choice. I dropped out in May 1962 and joined the U.S. Army where I eventually earned my G.E.D.
Workplace
After getting out of the Army in 1965 I kicked around and worked briefly at the Detroit Coca-Cola Bottling Co. I was laid-off from Coca-Cola in 1966.
In January, 1967 I applied for a job and was hired by Ford Motor Co at the National Parts Distribution Center in Livonia. I've been there ever since.
During my 36 years at Ford I've held just about every hourly job in the plant including long service as a UAW representative.
Currently, I have the best hourly job in the building. I work in the Maintenance Department as the Maintenance Follow-Up. I am responsible for ordering, purchasing and picking up everything (parts, services, equipment, etc.)needed to maintain the facility and keep it operating. I also maintain the TOX Reports and MSDS files.
Ford Motor Co has been very good to me and I will be forever grateful that they hired me and, along with the UAW and Local 600, gave me the opportunity to provide a good life for myself and my family.
