Angela's Story

Military Wow! What can I say about my military service? I went to boot camp at Great Lakes, Chicago, Illinois. I left November 14, 2001 and graduated January 24, 2002. I went to OS (Operations Specialist) "A" School at Dam Neck, Virginia. I met some people there who will stay in my heart forever. I graduated that April and took 30 days' leave before heading to my first duty station. I was so excited to see my family again, especially since they weren't able to come up and see me graduate from boot camp or "A" school. During my brief time at home, I also filed for divorce from my husband and father of my eldest daughter, Breanna. My first duty station was such an exciting, nervous, and memorable experience, I hold it very close to my heart. I was lucky enough to land myself on the USNS Rappahannock. It's a civilian-run oiler that at the time was stationed out of Sasebo, Japan. I spent a wonderful year in Japan. It was quite the culture shock too!! It took me a long time to get used to people driving "on the wrong" side of the road!! The food was fantastic, out in town and on the boat! Our cooks were Philipino, so fish and rice were served almost daily. I made some friends on the boat, mostly civilian, that I hold very close to my heart. Japan was crazy. The first time I ever went to Disney Land, I went to Tokyo Disney. I rode the bullet train to get there with two of the Navy guy's I was working with. We spent a wonderful day at Disney Land having a blast. That was definitely one of the highlights of my career!! Besides going all over Japan (Saseba, Yokosuka, Yokohama, Tokyo,) we went to Australia, Guam, and Singapore. I've decided if I ever moved out of the US, Singapore would be one of my destinations to live!! It's such a beautiful, but strict, country. I love how they live and how easy it is to get around. Everyone speaks English too! The Singapore Zoo was definitely one of the highlights of my time over there. Australia was another. I've always wa...Expand for more
nted to visit there so I was stoked to go. We spent 5 amazing days in Brisbane. We went to Singapore 3 times. The Synagogues and temples were absolutely breathtaking!! It's a small country, but very beautiful and extremely clean. I saw Guam about 4 times. My most memorable memory of Guam was the ship party we had at Gab-Gab beach. Yes, that is the actual name of this beach!! We bar-b-qued, we snorkeled, swam, sun-bathed, walked around on the beach. I've got some awesome pics of that party. The Rappahannock spends 3-4 years in Japan and then switches with another ship in San Diego. I rode the boat across the ocean to San Diego. It took us 2 weeks. My next duty station was in Norfolk, Virginia. This time I wasn't on a civilian-run oiler I was on a Cruiser 350 Naval personnel. Needless to say, I absolutely hated it. I made 2 extremely close friends there, not too mention all the non-military or ex-military friends I made outside the ship. Despite the ship that I hated with a passion, I had some amazing times in Norfolk. The pic I have of me on the beach was taken there in Norfolk. My favorite bar is in Norfolk. We didn't go anywhere. We went out to sea to do trials and such, but we never actually went anywhere. I wanted to see Europe and that's why I chose the East coast. That didn't happen. Some of my worst experiences also happened in Norfolk. My life completely changed in Norfolk, due to the Navy. Overall, my military experience is something I'll treasure forever. I have a new respect for the military men and women who fought in past wars. I don't completely agree with what's going on now, but I will definitely support our troops no matter what. They're only doing what their superiors tell them to. You get into serious, serious trouble if you don't follow a direct order. I understand how they feel about being in war now. I'm considered a war vet because of my time in service and when I went in. I'm very proud of my service and duty to my country.
