Anita's Story
After High School, I had to go to work full time, so I worked at Target, Taco Bell and McDonald's for a while, all while going to school part-time. In 1997, I fell ill and couldn't work for a while, so I moved in with my parents for a few months-which turned into 4 years! After doing so, I finished my Associate's in Education at Santa Rosa Junior College, was working full time, and getting ready for my wedding in June of 2001.
After getting married, I enrolled at Sonoma State University to finish my Bachelor's in English Lit. I had 2 years left, however, my husband decided to go back to school. So, in May of 2002, we loaded up our belongings and moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Concordia Seminary for 3 years, while I worked as a Teacher's Assistant for Special Education Teachers at a local high school. While being the primary bread winner, I was also attending classes part time at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. By the time my husband's 3 years of seminary were up, I had earned my Bachelor's degree in English Lit and was on my way to a teaching degree.
While my husband was attending seminary, we were helping to restart a church downtown, and were expecting to stay in St. Louis, but that didn't happen. After graduation, we got a call to Denver, CO, so we packed up our belongings again and headed west. I wasn't able to get my teaching degree, but I was able to start teaching a...Expand for more
t a local Lutheran High School. I was hired as an English teacher, but there were only 28 students in all four grades, so I taught all the English classes, Beginning Computers, Choir, Old Testament, and Spanish-all while taking on the responsibilities of Newsletter Editor and Yearbook Advisor. It was quite and experience, but those 3 years teaching Special Ed really helped me to be versatile.
Well, the school closed down, I gave birth and here I am-a stay-at-home mom. My husband is a pastor in downtown Denver, and I'm finally going back to school to get my teaching certificate-along with my Master's in Education. As I write this, I've been married for 7 years, lived in 3 different states, 5 different houses and my son is almost 2 years old! I currently hold down a few part-time jobs: I cook for 40 kids on Wednesday nights at a church, I am a worship leader at the same church on Wednesday evenings and some Sunday evenings, I work with a youth band on Sunday afternoons, and I occasionally teach guitar lessons. I still would like to teach after I get my master's, but music has become my main source of income at the moment-which is awesome! I would like to record more songs as well, but I do not want to become the next big thing-just let me play at various venues around Denver and I'm happy! My main focus right now is my family, and that keeps me very busy!
