Ann's Story
Life
Hello to everyone,
For the past twenty five years or so, my life has been anything but boring.
If I had to pick the best thing - it would be having my two
children. It all started in 1997 and that has been the most important thing
to me ever since.
We live in a small town in Texas where things are backwards.
We live with only one grocery store and dollar store and people congregate
at certain gas stations in the morning.
However, we're never more than 45 minutes from any Walmart in several
far more sophistocated places. We like to go to Austin and shop at The
Goodwill and go to great restaurants.
I can't say I have any career to brag about and really never
have. But my life has been real exciting at times and I've
met a lot of wonderful people over the years, living in many
places.
My career ambitions over the years brought me into a lot
of different kinds of jobs. Some clerical, sales, social
work, waitressing, and some extremes between management
and what many would call lowly manuel labor.
I got a college degree in 1988 - B.A in General Studies at Northeast Louisiana University.
I took mostly writing classes. It was supposed to be like a public relations degree only it took less time and money.
I met so many great people then and that was weird to me at the time
because I never thought I'd meet so many great people in a small town in Lousiana but it proved to be the opposite.
I still like to go back whenever i can. I like to see the
same people after 20 years.
Big cities to me are great for opportunities but i found them
too impersonal and always ended up going back to where the
opportunities were pretty much squat but where it felt good
to be.
However, I enjoyed going to college for a year or so in Austin Texas
and would not trade that for anything either.
For the past decade or so- I've spent most of my spare time
renovating houses. Not just interior design. I have picked
linolium off the floor with a screwdriver and a hammer for
months, painted whole exteriors and once powersanded a old
hardwood floor and inhaled too much polyurathene.
My latest ambitions have included going to Beauty School. In the
meantime, I work in the kitchen at a small cafe. Being creative
with the salads makes me happy. I get to use real flowers sometimes
and so it's not dealing with iceberg lettuce types.
On a more serious note, I would like to have a career and would like to
make more money. We plan to stay here in our small town where people
enjoy bonfires and fireworks at night pretty much all year at any given time.
Update for 2008 - over two years later - I did not
go to beauty school. Instead, I've been working my way up in restaraunt kitchens and now work all alone in a kitchen. It's enjoyable. But I still need to make more money.
Also, for some reason, my bio says I graduated from Santa Rosa High and I did not. I went to Lutheran High in St. Petersburg Florida and I want to say I really got a great deal of good out of going there and miss a lot of the people.
If it were not for going there, I am quite sure I would never have made it to college. Not to mention a lot of great friends that I made that changed my life. So for anyone reading th...Expand for more
is that went to "Lu-Hi" ( always a dorky name but has become endearing ) I miss seeing you. It's been pretty much silent for me since 1985 when the school closed down. There were only 7 of us in my class and a total of maybe 42 in the whole school.
I appreciate all the places I've lived - but for right now- we're still in the small town in Texas. I no longer have time to shop much. (I am not a shop-a -holic but for awhile i wondered.)
I work most of the time. We think it would be a good idea to move in the next few years or sooner so our kids can take dance lessons and have better places to hang out. Maybe Canada, or somewhere out west seems exciting at times. Most likely though, we'll be in Texas but in a bigger town.
I married a tall Texan man that wears a cowboy hat. We love to talk, fry chicken strips, or Elk or Deer if he's cooking. He looks like he's from around here. My children are growing up Texan.
As for me - again, if not for moving to Florida at age 14, and then having gone to College at 17 in Austin, Tx, then to Monroe, La, my life would just be so different. Anyone that knew me in Santa Rosa knew me as chronically late, the worst student, generally tortured. In Florida, all of that changed and I am so grateful. Now i'm almost never late, still have class-room anxiety and am learning a lot from my children's homework assignments - but I did prove to be able to pass College even if barely. So thank you to all of my long lost friends and teachers that were so good to me. Maybe one day I'll find a more rewarding career but at least i've learned how to run a restaurant, at least on a small scale.
Also, I'm a devoted happy mother and love my redneck husband. I can't say my marriage history is braggable but i always meant well. At least now I have something really loveable going strong for about three years. So that's where I'm at now.
I really hope to read more about more people in the future. I hope my silent class of 7 comes out of the woodwork someday. That was something - three years of the same 7 plus or minus and then almost nothing. It was one of the best times of my life. So if you are one of those reading, I hope you'll write something. Anyway, to those that messed up my hair, glued my locker shut, made embarrasing comments and otherwise humilated me day after day, I really value those ridiculous experiences now-
For anyone that knew me in California, for everyone that was nice to me, I still remember and appreciate it a lot.
i've already said how much I love the time I've spent in Lousiana. It may have changed for the worst in the last ten years - but I'd still recommend it for charm, romance and beautiful scenery.
Lastly, I hope that more people will write about themselves. I have really admired the more revealing bio's people have written. So that's why I refuse to write a glossy about myself. Thats all I can think to say.
Except that I want to say I really, really want to go to at least one high school reunion. I have never been to one. I would love to go to the florida one but they have never existed since the school disappeared. I spent k-9 in Santa Rosa so thats about an equal to me. So I hope to show up someday.
