Anna's Story
Life
How does a person possibly update everyone on the past 10+ years??
I'll hit the highlights! I played volleyball at Columbia College and graduated with a Biology degree. (That's one unemployable degree down, one to go!) I then joined YWAM (Youth With A Mission) and moved to Scotland for a few months of missions training. Our team went to Nicaragua for 2 months and helped out with the relief efforts of Hurricane Mitch (Dec 1998-Feb 1999). Afterwards, three friends and I (a girl from Alaska, a guy from Seattle and another guy from England) backpacked Europe for several weeks and managed to do it for less than $25 a day! (Of course, this was before the euro so good luck making it under $25 now!)
I returned to Anderson and worked in the research department at a friend's company. After 6 months I left and went to work in the Student Accounts Office of Anderson College. I eventually moved on campus as a Resident Hall Director -- it was fun, but demanding!! Those 2 1/2 years were great because I was able to visit YWAM friends. This greatly helped to break up the mundane work routine. I was able to fly out to Seattle a few times (the first painful hours of snowboarding are so worth it), visit friends in the UK for Christmas/New Years 2000, spend a week in Chicago for a YWAM wedding, and spend a couple of weeks in Alaska. Just two of the benefits of YWAM are the life-long friends you make -- and the distances you get to travel to see them!
Between the travels and work weeks, I studied for the LSAT and visited law schools, thinking that my dream would be to work for my cousin's friend who started the International Justice Mission. Through the process I learned, through God's grace to reveal His plans for me, that I was instead supposed to go to seminary. In the fall of 2002, I moved to the North Shore of Massachusetts to attend Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
I finished my Masters in Theology in the May of 2004. (This would be the 2nd unemployable degree!!) I got to see some of you...Expand for more
at our high school reunion later that summer -- where were the rest of you??
After three months of stressful job hunting, I landed a job at Lesley University in Cambridge as an Assistant Director of Financial Aid. Since I had worked in the Student Accounts Office all through college and 2 years at AC (now AU, I guess!), plus the year I worked in Gordon-Conwell's Admissions Office, it just seemed that the Financial Aid Office would round out my higher-ed employment experience! (Anyone buying that?!)
I'm now the Associate Director of Financial Aid and oversee all the graduate and adult undergraduate programs (about 10,000 students). The best part is that Lesley University operates in 23 states and I'm able to speak to students from South Carolina and Georgia all the time! Sometimes they joke that they hired me so that I could act as mediator and translate! (What they don't know is that I have to translate for THEM!)
I married a great guy from Michigan on December 31, 2005 and we currently live 5 miles outside Boston. My name has changed drastically ... from Anna Jackson to ... (drum roll) Anna Johnson! (At least I didn't hyphenate it, right?!) Some of you met Mike at the reunion. Just ask Sally "Acker" and Stacy "Gaines" what they think about his nerve to choose water over sweet tea at the reunion! He was such a 'yankee' that night! :)
Mike finished Gordon-Conwell with his M.Div in May 2006 and then earned his M.A. in Counseling/Psychology in May 2009. He has been serving as a mental health therapist while finishing the ordination requirements. We look forward to launching a new phase in our lives soon. Until then, we're enjoying all that Boston has to offer!
If you are ever in the Boston area and you would like your own personal tour guide, feel free to call me! I even have an Anderson cell phone # (love the family plan!). Take care, Everyone! Stay in touch as often as you can! (By the way, you can find me on facebook! I log in when I'm not snowed under with work.) God bless you!
