Anne's Story

We moved away from South Orange after 7th grade, first to Valley Stream, Long Island, then to New York City, where I attended and graduated from the High School of Music and Art. I graduated from Oberlin College as a Sociology major in 1964, then obtained a second bachelor's degree in Nursing from Columbia University in 1966. From there I traveled, living and working for a year in Seattle, then 2 years in Philadelphia, where I taught Pediatric Nursing. After obtaining a master's degree in Maternal-Child Nursing from University of Colorado in Denver in 1971, I came to Madison, Wisconsin to teach Pediatric Nursing at the University of Wisconsin. I've been here ever since. In 1979 I got married to David Sulman, a physician and widower who had two young children, Rachel and Aaron. Rachel is a flutist, married and living and teaching in Jerusalem. Aaron is a physician, (Urology) married to a Pediatric ENT doctor. They live in Brookfield, WI and have 2 children, 5 year old Noah and 2 year old Jonah. David and I had another baby, Joshua, born in 1980, and then twins, Jonathan and Benjamin, born in 1983, so it was a very full and busy household. I took a leave of absence from my job teaching and serving as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at University of Wisconsin Hosp...Expand for more
itals and never returned to it. The demands of research, teaching and administration were too much to do along with parenting 5 kids. Jon and his wife (they met at Carleton College) now live in Minneapolis and are parents of 2 year old Eve. Ben completed his PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in May, 2012 and is currently doing a postdoc in Princeton, NJ. His girlfriend is completing her PhD in the same field. Josh has a master's degree in Botany. He and his wife live near us, and I help take care of their 2 year old twin sons, Jacob and Daniel while their parents are at work. In addition, I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) and a La Leche League leader for a very active group of mothers all nursing twins and triplets. I serve on a number of local and statewide boards and task forces working to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. In my spare time we enjoy traveling (we are signed up to take a Road Scholar program this summer, hiking the eastern coast of Newfoundland), and participating in the U. of WI PLATO program for senior learning (Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization). I often wonder what has become of my classmates at Montrose School. Would love to be in touch! Anne Altshuler, April 16, 2013
