Anne's Story

My birthday is coming up, maybe that's why I'm writing after all this time. What do I wonder about? Well, I wonder if the most beautiful girl in our class, the amazing Gerry Gorman, ever found happiness. Or was the price for such violet eyes and raven hair a life of too much attention from the wrong kind of man? Can people ever really forgive and forget, I think about that too. How long did it take for someone to finally put a stop to the abuse and horror of the rectory--I could see it from my room? Or does it all continue, unchanged and protected by people too afraid of the truth to stand up for the victims, the children? I rember that Sister Linus Mary published in The Point, our school newspaper, that I was a member of the NAACP and had gone to hear DR. King speak but then she did nothing to protect me from all the racial slurs and hideous, angry passion she prevoked. I was class president yet she told me she had to honor her vow, what a joke, of "obedience" and ...Expand for more
she refused to help me search out university or college scholarships. Even after both my parents died, and I was forced out of my house with only my clothes and around fifty dollars. Everything I confided in her went right back to Fr. Lawler or Fr. Bradey--great guys, remember their disgusting shows in black face? That I ever trusted her does seem laughable with what I know now, but I wanted to believe in someone and she talked a good game --up to a point. The insanity of the priests living the high life in their mini-mansion with a cook and other servants, I can never really explain it to someone from outside our world. Father Lawler's airplane, Father O'Really's sail boat, the new cars the absolute distain for all the women who ever needed comfort or a moral helping hand. So I remember almost everything, some of it is still funny. The time I invited the French navy to visit our little French class--and they came!Lots of things swirling around in my mind and heart.
