Anne's Story

Life I would love to hear how you and other former classmates are doing. School Singing in Caprice and Madrigals was the best, as well as accompanying choirs on the piano. Maxine Blackwell was my mentor, and the musical experience I had there set the bar for quality and my love of choral music. I'd love to hear from ALL former Caprice and Madrigals. For 8 years I was the full-time Director of Music Ministries at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville where Maxine was for her entire adult life. It was great to work in carrying on her music tradition and expanding it into the future. There are still former East singers that serve in the choirs there. I am the founding director of the Central Carolina Children's Chorus, a graded, auditioned choir program for kids in Winston-Salem,and still use what I learned while in chorus at East. Still, Maxine's greatest talent was in loving us and believing in us. That, I will always remember and treasure. window and sneak in anytime of the day or night? It was amazing how many times that old statue of the Winged Angel got moved in front of our music professors' office doors. Brass Methods Classes at 8:00 in the morning in the basement of Odell was just the pitts! However, the water fights in the Greensboro Dorm and streakers during exam week were lots of fun. I do remember the flagpole and how various items of clothing would appear on it on Monday mornings! Disco was big as well as platform shoes and boots--the same style of clothes that my daughter now wears. I take her shopping and feel like we've gone back in time. Mrs. Matty was a jewel, so refined and sweet, and just mothered us all. Bless her heart, she and Mrs. Shinn just LOVED Lawrence Welk every Saturday night! Where else would you be served Russian Tea from a silver tea service in your dorm during December? At present I direct the Central Carolina Children's Chorus, an auditioned, graded choir program for kids in Winston-Salem, and continue my work in choral music. I would love to hear from you! --Anne
