Anne's Story

Life Wow... Married 25 years May 2007. Never thought it would happen in my twenties. I was wilder then - some people at school may not have known - other than the fact that I rode a motorcycle. When I met my (now) husband in the late 70's, we built a homemade camper for the back of a rebuilt '52 GMC pick up truck, then quit our jobs and travelled west across Canada, down to central California, and back again. It was a fantastic adventure for four months. We decided to move to northwestern Ontario where we had some friends. Trying to move there was incredibly hard because we had a near fatal accident on the 401. We were hit from behind by a drunken driver. The truck rolled over and was hit again by another vehicle while we tried to escape. One person died in the other car when a transport hit them broadside. We were the lucky ones and although we lost 90% of our belongings and our lovely rebuilt truck, we eventually made the trip again at my dad's encouragement. He said, "If you don't go and things don't go well here, you will always believe that your lives might have been better - there will always be a question hanging over your heads. You can always come back if things don't work out." We went, and he was right. A 2 year experiment to live in beautiful northern Ontario turned into 19 years living in a cabin in the bush - the first 7 years without a phone. (I only required that we had hot & cold running water and electricity - and that's about what we had.) We lived on 160 acres with a river running through it - wildlife at the front and back doors and some fabulous fishing and sunsets. We homesteaded after a fashion, growing our own vegetables and raising our own chickens, ducks, and geese for a few years - and I even learned to butcher my own chickens. There's a skill I never thought in a million ye...Expand for more
ars I would want or need! I became quite domesticated and even learned to bake bread and farm fair award winning pies and butter tarts. Oh my, was that me? I've had about 15 different careers and twice as many jobs. Over the years in the north, I met some of the best people I know, became an administrative assistant for a children's mental health centre, pay equity project coordinator for the local board of education. I even tried real estate, followed by business consulting, and spent ten years as a computer software teacher at the college while also being self-employed in software training and consulting. We've moved back to southwestern Ontario to be near to our families, rather than spending every vacation to see them. We sold our property after building a lovely home ourselves. We bought a more traditional camper trailer and said tearful goodbyes to our friend on the evening of September 10, 2001. We didn't know that the morning would become the fateful day of 9/11. At first, we didn't know whether to leave or to stay with our friends. After several hours watching the horror on the TV at our local coffee pub, we decided not to make our friends endure another goodbye and left. We traveled to the east coast and then down to Florida for a few weeks. Finally, we decided to return and rest for a few weeks, buy a small country property in southwestern Ontario, and go back to work again. What we do for jobs doesn't matter so much as who we are, and I'm a happy person with a great life partner. We like to get away when we can afford to and travel to see places we haven't been before. Someday, I'd love to go to New Zealand or Australia and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. My to-do list is very long and only partially complete, but life is very full. I wish the same for all of you I knew in my "past" life. Anne
