Anne's Story

Hello and welcome to my profile. Life has been an amazing journey, full of twists and turns I never imagined! After high school, I attended a small private college in Salt Lake City. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science. I had an internship with the County Inpatient Psychiatric unit that turned into a job. I found a niche in working with the mentally ill. I love their open and uncensored expressions. I was introduced to Recreational Therapy there and saw a great opportunity for myself. I attended the University of Utah and earned a masters degree in Recreational Therapy. I was briefly married and after my divorce I wanted out of Utah! I secured a job in San Jose, California as a program director for a locked psychiatric hospital. I also took on a part time job at a neurological hospital working with survivors of head injury. There I developed an outpatient recreational therapy program with a group of parents who had children that had head injuries. I loved these folks and called them "my kids" even though they were all adults. These families became my California family and I still have close ties with them to this day. My work at the psychiatric hospital was stressful. I realized I needed a new career after my tires were slit and I had a threat on my life by a former employee. I loved science, medicine and people. I saw an opportunity with Merck Pharmaceuticals. In 1990, I joined Merck as a representative in Sunnyvale, California. I had great success with Merck and received numerous promotions. In 1993, I was promoted to Health Science Associate. This was a high science specialist position. I absolutely loved it. The training for this position lasted 3 months with much of it on my own reading and studying. It was during this time I started to notice strange things going on with my body. I had one leg that was numb and one that would give out for no apparent reason. When I moved my head I heard and felt a strange noise and sensation. With each week more symptoms occurred. My husband had just finished the PA program at Stanford and he got me into see a neurologist. I had MRI's of my brain and spine and a spinal tap. It all pointed to one thing, Multiple Sclerosis. I was devastated. I treated it aggressively at Stanford Medical Center. I was able to continue working, often time going to work with an IV in my arm as the treatment was 5 days of high dose steroids to decrease the inflammation caused by the disease. This would be repeated again in 30 days. The first ever treatment for MS became available in 1994 and I had to put my name into a lottery as there was a very limited supply! When my name was drawn I had decided to start my family and I could not take it. I was overjoyed with the birth of my son in 1995. I took a 6 mont...Expand for more
h maternity leave to be with him. As I returned to work I had a severe M.S. flare. I again treated it aggressively with IV steroids and started on an MS medicine shot and continued working. However, the disease became too much for me and i retired with a medical disability. As I mourned the loss of my career that I loved so dearly, I experienced the amazing joy of being a full time Mom. In 1998 I was blessed with the birth of my daughter. I yearned to return to Colorado to raise my children and moved to Pueblo, Co in 1998. I never imagined myself living in Pueblo, but I really enjoy it here. The weather is especially great for me, not too cold in the winter, little snow and cool summer nights. I have been filled with the joy of raising my children, being involved in all of their activities. My son will graduate from high school in May and my daughter is a currently a freshmen in high school. After my daughter's birth, the MS went wild. I experienced flare after flare. In 2001, I divorced and told my doctor I had to do something drastic to get the MS into remission. He gave me several choices and I chose a chemotherapy. From September of 2002 until September of 2004 I had chemo every 3 months. While those were extremely difficult years, there has been immense benefit. I have not had an active flare since then!!!!! While the MRI's show some mild progression of the disease in the last few years, I am doing amazingly well. I am able to walk fairly well and love to walk as fast as I can. I struggle with pain, numbness and memory issues. I am fatigued very easily and do not bounce back like most. I have been involved in numerous clinical trials for MS. I feel this is one way I can contribute to the scientific community and all MS patients. We still do not know what causes it so it is impossible to find a cure. It is believed that there is an environmental stimuli responsible and that there is a genetic predisposition for getting the disease. You may recall my grandmother Dorthy Williams had MS. So far I am the only one in the Williams family with the disease. And that it is an autoimmune disease, meaning the immune system attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Medicine has made great progress in the treatment of MS since I was diagnosed. There are several shots available to decrease the disease activity. Recently, several oral medications have been approved and are available, all focus on modulating the immune system. At this time I am not taking them as I had breast cancer in 2012 and am not willing to alter my immune system. I continue to be happy and productive. I have many interests and stay active with my church and children. While I never thought my life would be what it is, I am content with what I have. God Bless.
