Annette's Story

Hiya! My best accomplishment is having raised two fine intelligent good-hearted sons. One was a code breaker in Afghanistan and now works for Lockheed; the other lives near me and keeps the hospital in Gig Harbor running 24/7. They both also played in jazz bands, saxophone and trombone and the younger one is a brilliant guitarist. My passion was ice skating for over twenty years. As an adult, I found my way back to a childhood sport that is akin to flying. Picking it up in Fort Worth, TX where my older son was about to be married, I stayed for awhile working at Starbucks and skating on my days off in a little golden rink downtown that I am sure had been in my dreams. I met and married a man who was the Associate Vice President of Mens Wearhouse and was privileged to travel all over the United States and Canada, skates in tow. Highlights of that tour were skating the Olympic Oval in Calgary, the charming outdoor rink in Toronto, Central Park Manhattan, Rockefeller Center (it is so tiny!) at Christmas!, and my absolute biggest thrill skating with the Statue of Liberty in view from on the ice at Chelsea Piers. Finally, living in San Francisco I enjoyed coffee clubs at Kristy Yamaguchi's hometown rink in Fremont, CA where I worked at a funky Half Price Books (came across a book written by Grant Fjermedal :) ) and lived in North Beach while I had the privilege of teaching tiny tots and beginner adults how to skate. Brian Boitano was often on the ice and I had opportunity to speak with him and other Olympic skaters during that time. One night we had a show and Surya Bonaly did two back flips ten feet away from me. Rudy Galindo was also featured that nig...Expand for more
ht and I walked past Caryn Kadevy in the wings waiting to go on . . . if you are a skater, you appreciate what a thrill this can be:) Remember the young woman who could spin until tomorrow? She joined our coaching team for a short while and I was able to visit with her in the dressing room. I remember she had painted sparkles on her blades and we talked about that. Alas, the other coaches froze her out because they felt threatened by her incredible talent, I guess, and eventually she left. This is one reason I am not still there . . . the ice skating world has a not very nice side underneath it all. haha! All you can do is laugh. Once home, my younger son who is a beautiful skater (he can do a spread eagle like nobody's business), took me for a birthday skate at Rosalynn Sumner's home ice in Lynnwood, one of the nicest rinks ever, if you should be inclined. Recently, I had to give the sport up, and feeling lost and adrift (who doesn't feel that way these days) I came home and have ensconced myself at the beach in Victor (on the Key Peninsula) where I am studying Italian and working on putting together an Etsy store named Twiggyville, featuring 60s fashions. (and 70s, for as we all know, the 60s mostly happened in the 70s). So now, as a dear friend recently wrote to me, this about sums up my life for the last 40 years:) Best wishes to all who read this and good on us for traveling this far. xoxoAnnetteDianne February 28, 2024 . . . Winging my way back home to Los Alamos to work with the YMCA after-school program. You have all you need to know now in order to look me up if you should find yourself in town! Be well and cheers to turning 74! Annie
