Anthea's Story
Life
At Ketcham Elem. in Anacostia K-4, we lived on 17th st. near Kramer Jr. K-Miss Scalara; 1-?; 2-Miss Bogardus; 3-Miss Judy(best teacher ever); 4-Mrs. Jones. We moved to Oxon Hill on Oak Lane, where I attended Fort Foote Elem. 5-Mrs. Swain; 6-Miss Hylton. On to Oxon Hill Jr. 7-8-9. The school was run by a bunch of nazi control freaks, severly restrictive about everything. Oxon Hill High was much more relaxed..10-11-12. Hated school and so Sept. '70 I went to work at the Dept. of Justice where I met Michael (future spouse)on my first day. We were married July '72 (a week after Hurricane Agnes hit). I worked at the Dept of Justice for 5 years. In 1974 Michael graduated from Georgetown Law School and we bought our first house. In '77 we started a family & I became a stay at home mom & community volunteer. We had 2 boys & a girl now 35, 30, and 27. My 30 year old was married 2011 and no grandchildren yet. In June of 2012 I celebrated 15 years as a breast cancer survivor. self. Currently, I am working part time at Antique Row in Kensington and have selling space doing business as "The Vintage Vagabond" which could mean me or the items I am selling! We were lucky enough to have bought a condo several years ago in SW Florida, so far so good with the hurricanes missing our immediate area. We try to get away as often as we can and usually spend February there enjoying the sunshine and a slower pace of life. No plans to live there, ever! May 2010 we went on a wonderful 2 week European river cruise with Viking, which was fantastic. Met a number of very interesting people and made a few new friends. The day after we arrived home there was a fire in our garage which spread into the family room and was into the entry hal and kitchenl. It was all so very surreal watching our house burn...between the fire, the smoke and the firemen there was tons of damage and our home was declared uninhabitable. Lived in a rental house provided by insurance company right next...Expand for more
to NIH. Everything to set up a household was provided by the insurance company. After 14 months. What a nightmare! Our home was torn down to stud and so this became an opportunity to update the very dated 1959 floorplan. We moved back home July 2011 and began the task of going through our previous life in a gazillion boxes that were returned to us. Many things were lost to the fire, but plenty came back and I am still sifting through stuff to see if they were able to actually clean things well enough to keep them. It has been a ton of work. We do love our new floorplan and my kids look at it as if we have moved, but the view is the same. The family home is gone. Our insurance company (Hartford) was excellent as they denied us nothing! October of 2011, we took a 2 week Russian River Cruise on Viking with one of the couples we met on the first cruise. Wow, that was amazing and we had never been so far from home. Moscow was awesome, like New York meets Las Vegas on steroids or something. St. Petersburg was full of their Royalty history and lovely architecture. Next trip coming up will be 2 weeks Greece/Turkey. Part cruise on a small French boat and travelling for a week around Turkey. Should be interesting. Anthea 9/2012 Turkey was so very interesting and exotic! It was a trip I will never forget so many things happened. Had to have a complete knee replacement May/2013, that was an experience, all I can say is do the physical therapy and keep doing it! Off to the South of France 6/2013 on another river boat cruise with Viking. Great food, wine, and scenery. 2014 off to a great start in Fla. Spring full of wedding events up to our oldest son getting married in Newport, RI 5/2. What a party! Off to Italy and the UK for 3 weeks then off to Normandy, France for 12 days. Wow!! two trips to Europe in one year. 2014 has been so busy. What fun Europe is! Hope to make it to Northern Europe in 2016 (taking a year off from foreign travel).
