Anthony's Story
Celebrating 71 years of a memories and a blessed life with miracles (to God be the glory). It is an honor to share some of my adventures with my classmates and hope you are enlightened and share your experiences. Coming to North Charleston High School in 1970 was a significant emotional event in my life. I attended Chicora High from 8th to 11th grade and expected to graduate from that school. Looking back and reminiscing, the forced integration and civil rights laws that required many of us to be transferred or relocated from Chicora High to North Charleston High (which happen to be 10-15 miles away from home) was quite traumatic. However, this action contributed to my growth, character, personality, and demeanor. I learned how to be flexible, adapt, and made many lifelong friends and acquaintances. I did not know exactly what I wanted to do. My selective service or draft number was 0031. Many of my friends joined the service and I figured I would follow my big brother and join the US Navy. He served four years, returned home, attended college, got married, and was working at the Charleston Navy Yard. After thinking about the experience my brother had and his success, I enlisted into the US Army in February 1972. I actually signed up for the US Navy in November 1971, but it was taking too long for the Navy to find me an assignment. So, I waited until February 1972 and decided to talk with an Army recruiter, who gave me a test, and two days later I departed for Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC, and was sworn into the Army on 25 February 1972. More to come later.
In January 1972, my first child was born 8th day; Antoinette. Patricia and I got married July 21 1972 and moved to Columbia SC for my first assignment in the US Amry.
