April's Story
After graduation and a bit of work experience I travelled to England in 1989 and loved it so much I stayed. I was "naturalised" in 1995 and having lived in England for over 20 years now so I feel much more British than Canadian, although I will always have a soft spot for the Great White North.
I met my husband, Guy, in London in early April 1989. It was love at first sight and we have been together ever since. In October of 1989 we adopted two cats, Jake and Elwood, who were a special part of our family for eighteen years. We still miss them. In the late 80's / early 90's, we travelled a great deal and really enjoyed ourselves. At that time, I was working at both Molinare and W H Smith television. It was an exciting and interesting time both personally and professionally for me.
Guy and I were married in 1991 in Chislehurst, Kent in a lovely 12th century church. After a honeymoon in the Canary Islands we settled back down at home in London. I left television and worked for the Wellcome Foundation until just before our son Alexander was born in 1993. In search of more space, we reluctantly left London and moved down the road to Orpington in Kent. In 1996 we moved up to the Midlands and settled in Branston, a suburb of Burton-on-Trent (the home of Bass Beer!). We really enjoyed our time there. Just after celebrating the Millenium we moved to a wonderful house in Derby (near the edge of the Peak District) where we lived for eight years. We moved back down South in 2007, to a village about half an hour on the train from London. We live near the Thames in a very beautiful part of West Berkshire. We ...Expand for more
are very grateful to have a beautiful home and a really comfortable life.
I am a professional housewife and writer. I founded the website 21st Century Housewife.com in 2002 and we are celebrating our twelfth anniversary this year. The 21st Century Housewife is a food, lifestyle and travel website with inspiration, tips and trends for anyone who loves food, cooking, entertaining, fashion, travel & the finer things in life. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen developing recipes and am at work on my first cookbook. I have been published in the press in both UK and the US. I also write travel and hotel reviews, as well as restaurant reviews. I am working on my first book.
I'm also very into Pilates and Yoga, attending several classes each week. I also have a personal trainer to help me keep fit.
My husband Guy is British but lived all over the world when he was growing up.In particular, Guy spent a number of years in Paris and the United States. After graduating from the American University in Paris he returned to England in the late 1980's. Guy now works in Senior Management for Apple.
Our son Alexander is 21 and working in the City of London. He has a lovely girlfriend who has become a wonderful part of our family.
We love to entertain and also to travel. Being so close to Europe makes it easy to sneak in weekend breaks as well as longer trips and really get to see the world. We also get back to Canada quite a lot. Our most recent trips were to Toronto, New York City, Tel Aviv and San Francisco. We are heading back to San Francisco in a few weeks and are looking forward to visiting Bermuda in July.
