April's Story
School
I went to three different high schools:
Freshman and sophomore years spent at Sumter High--I remember dressing up for Gamecock week (I still have a picture dressed up as a clown); riding around the ice cream shop parking lot; roller skating. My biggest crush there was on Mark Briggs. My very best friend then and now is Lora Porter (she even introduced me to my husband).
Junior year was at Shelby County High in Kentucky. It was the first time in my life I went to school with members of my family other than my brothers. My time at Shelby High was very special and has a very special place in my heart. I had some very special relationships there...I remember--finding out that football was not the "it" sport (go UK!!!--that's for you, Charley!); learning about how tobacco was dried; seeing some of the most beautiful horse ranches ever; having Mr. Carr for Biology and busting a gut when he buried a straight pin with a bead on the end in one of the oysters that was being dissected; my fa...Expand for more
vorite teacher was Mrs. Garrett. She made me love Algebra. I remember playing "Preacher Pat" down in Rosella's basement. The most special part of spending that year in Kentucky was being able to spend time with my dad's family.
My senior year was spent here in Huntsville at Huntsville High. It was very difficult to move to a new school for my senior year--and to move to a school that did not get a whole lot of new students (I was used to being near military bases). I made some good friends in a short time. I remember--dressing up as a Smurf; sitting in the Senior Lounge (woot!); asking Joe Davis to the Sadie Hawkins dance and then hitting my head on my car door (dork!); being a dance team manager and fluffing those damn pom-poms!!!!! But I loved watching them perform (they were awesome!); carrying a torch for a guy who lived in Kentucky and writing a poem about it; always wanting to take a ride in Harris' MG.
Thanks to all of you who helped make all my high school years fun and eventful.
