Ariane's Story
(2018) It's been another 5 years, so I should probably update this. The biggest change is that I'm in graduate seminary (Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley), working towards a Master's in Theological Studies (MTS) and ordination as an Episcopal Deacon. My husband and I moved from Berkeley to El Cerrito and we're enjoying being "empty nesters".
(2013) OK! If anyone's looked at this recently, I hadn't updated it for... 5 years! And in that time a LOT has changed. I've been engaged, disengaged, married and baptized (Episcopalian - go figure); I've grown, the kids have grown; I've moved, the kids have moved (& are moving)... basically, I haven't been idle and the world hasn't stopped spinning. Life is good.
High School was an interesting 3 years. I left a year early and went to College of Marin, SRJC and Portland CC - didn't walk cap-and-gown until going back and getting my AS (in Behavioral Science) from COM in 1999 (life intervened first, but I got there). I've ended up with a BA (in business admin) and an MSBA - the Business degrees seemed more useful than Behavioral Science, though the latter was definitely more fun.
Some of the coolest things I remember from Redwood:
- Helping to start the Nuclear Awareness & Action Club
- Selling lemonade or some such while sitting on Jon Barwood's shoulders
- A pool party at Matt Goodheart's house where he played the piano so beautifully! (Matt just got his PhD in music!)
- Hot tubbing with friends (it didn't seem an odd pasttime then...)
- Playing backgammon with Peter at the back of our Freshman English class (thanks, Mr. Redenius!)
- Sitting on the lawn in ...Expand for more
the fog with my friends
- Dancing to Stratagem by the CEA and JBMBB at Uncle Charlie's
- Dancing to White Stagg and Psychefunkapus
- The "Tri-school dance" with Huey Lewis & The News
- ROLLER SKATING! Good Lord - Marin Skateland.
- Caffe Nuvo (and for those what knows, yeah we're still around... come join us on Facebook!)
For the years in-between (I've recently been noticing how many of them have passed): I sang in the gospel choir at Glide Memorial in the City a while (way) back; lived in Portland, Tulsa, LA, most cities in Marin and now the East Bay; sang in a band for a few years and cut a few CDs; danced my butt off to Lee Presson and the Nails; worked lots of Renaissance and Dickens Fair(e)s and recently gave up Steampunk for Lent.
And so now...
I work as an Executive Assistant at Cal, supporting the deans in the College of Engineering - cool stuff, neat people and they treat me well. I still sing, (and play bodhran, dumbek and washboard) though mostly in church on Sundays (is that too weird, coming from a Marinite kid?), and I finally renewed my Classmates subscription so I could say hi to y'all. When I'm not working? I knit, I read, I watch Vikings, Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black as a guilty pleasure. OK, fine - and Mad Men, Colbert, the Daily Show... House of Cards (Netflix is useful).
Opinions?
- I think the music kids these days listen to is noise and they should all get off my lawn.
- That whole "random acts of kindness" is actually a really good idea.
- So is not being judgmental - I'm working on that.
- I'll take cider over beer any day... but a real drink has an umbrella in it.
