Class of 1961! Just a note to say hi to those of you visiting my "profile." My husband, Art, and I have been living in Yakima for over five years now. We love it!
I am retired from 40 years as a dental hygienist. In thinking about what I wanted to do to stay out of trouble, I applied to the State and received my certification as an emergency substitute teacher about five years ago. In the past few years, I have been subbing in six school districts and what fun it has been. I have had some unbelievable experiences, as you can imagine. I've actually learned how to say "please, pull your pants up!", "that is unacceptable behavior!", "that language is not acceptable in my classroom!", and "take a walk to the office!!" I could write a book! Maybe I'll do that some day. In September, I began a new adventure, moving slightly away from the subbing, by becoming the pianist for the Toppenish High School choirs. This typically involves two days a week; a few more days just before concerts/performances. This has to be my "dream job." I accompany four choirs and an African Drumming Ensemble at times, also. The director is amazing. In four years, she has built the T.H.S. program from eight girls to over 200 students moving through her classes. She is having a tremendous impact on her students. It is unbelievably wonderful to be able to play the piano...and get paid for it, too! Plus...no classroom managemen...Expand for more
t, except for random days of subbing. (Can't believe I root for the Toppenish WildCats now, can you? Something has to be wrong with that scenario!)
Both my son and daughter are married and I am blessed with two adorable little grandsons and one tiny, beautiful, month-old granddaughter, Madeline Kay. My grandson, Cody is 4-1/2 years and reading like a second grader and Blakey is 2-1/2 years and talking our legs off...always carrying some kind of ball or car. Precious Madeline was born in March (due April 21), weighing 4.3 lbs and 16-3/4 inches long. She is just perfect, but very little. How I love being a grandma!
Art and I are actively involved in a wonderful church here in West Valley. I continue to play the piano for some of the chapel services at the retirement community where Art is a fulltime chaplain.
I'm hoping to go to Phoenix, AZ, in May to visit one of my aunts, who is elderly, and her daughter. Also hoping to see Janet Walker Johnson Jones, who lives there and was in a terrible car accident in March...slowly recuperating. We are looking forward to a fun-filled vacation in St. Louis and Branson, MO. this summer. Just touring, wandering, and enjoying fabulous shows. Then a trip through the Panama Canal is on the agenda later on. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. Just can't go far enough fast enough.
I hope you and yours are all well and happy. Love to hear from you!
Blessings on you,
Arlee
