Arlinda's Story
Life
I have been married since 1999 to my wonderful husband, Chris Porter. Many of you remember his parents, Coach Porter and Mrs. Porter who both taught at Newton County High School. We have three sons. Patrick was born in 2001, Preston was born in 2003, and Phillip was born in 2005. We live in Cumming, Georgia. I stopped teaching for over six years to be a stay-at-home mom. During that time, I helped Chris with his company Porterware, LLC. He designs, builds, and hosts websites for small to medium size businesses. Now, I am back teaching for the Forsyth County School System as a special education teacher.
School
Chris and I both miss Covington. We enjoyed the small-town feel of Covington, and we miss all of our friends from school. But, we are really making Cumming, GA our home now. We have lived in Cumming since our marriage in 1999. More than anything, I hope that our boys have wonderful teachers that they will always remember like Chris and I did. My most inspiring teachers had to be Miss. Bonnie Gilbert from Heard-Mixon, Mrs. Ann Spillars/Mrs. Patton from Sharp, and Mrs. Frances Rogers from Newton County High.
College
I loved, loved, loved going to college at Oxford College and Emo...Expand for more
ry University for my undergraduate degrees. I enjoyed everything about those two schools. But, I am still waiting for my chance to turn a pair of blue jeans into a life-saving floatation device as we all had to learn in that manditory swimming class at Oxford. On a serious note, I would be thrilled if any of my three boys decided to attend either school. Chris, on the other hand, is hoping that the boys choose to go to his Alma Mater, Georgia Tech. I guess that he and I both have three chances to lobby for our schools.
Workplace
After completing a Master's Degree and pre-professional certification to become a Marriage and Family therapist, I suddenly realized that I did not want to spend the rest of my life listening to problems. I don't mean to sound cold, but I discovered that is not what I wanted to do each and every day. I do wish that I had realized that a bit earlier before going into student loan debt. But, I did go back to receive a degree in Education. I am now a special education teacher, and I absolutely love it. I get to see great progress with my students who are all very loving. I could not imagine having any other job. Moreover, I get to work at the same school that my kids attend.
