Arnold's Story

Even back in high school, Arnie Gross was always an amazingly versatile musician. For the final four years of its run, he served as musical director for the original Broadway company of "Annie". As orchestrator, Arnie provided new arrangements for the acclaimed revival of "Funny Girl" with Juliet Prowse and Larry Kert at the St. Louis Municipal Opera. As dance arranger, Arnie created show-stoppers for a number of Broadway shows including Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along" and "Sugar Babies" (which he also co-orchestrated). Arnie's dance arrangements were featured in the Bob Fosse film, "All That Jazz"(in which he also portrayed himself). Arnie served as chief arranger for the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point, wrote arrangements for the Ed Sullivan Show, and created musical material for numerous television specials starring Carol Burnett, Beverly Sills and Alan King, as well as music for the Emmy Aw...Expand for more
ard-winning NBC-TV children's series, "Unicorn Tales". He especially enjoyed writing a series of arrangements for the American Ballroom Theatre Company, in which he had to recreate the sounds of popular dance music from the turn of the (20th) century to the 90's. Arnie's playing credits (Oboe, English Horn, Percussion, and Piano) range from the American Symphony Orchestra (under Leopold Stokowski) to the entire commercial spectrum of the NYC music business. On the local front, Arnie has taught music theory and orchestration at Western Connecticut State University, and he is currently instructing instrumental ensembles at The Canterbury School in New Milford, CT. Arnie regularly performs with the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, for which he has also held various positions over the past twenty-two years, including Associate Conductor, Stage Manager, and Personnel Manager. Arnie lives in Southbury (CT, North of Danbury).
