Arnold's Story

What are a few memories? From High School Team-taught Physiology: Ms. Wilson is lecturing on the definition of "work", Mr. Hill illustrating. "Work is the expenditure of energy -- Mr. Hill is attempting to hold up that wall." (Mr. Hill is valiantly pushing, turning red) "but in physiology, Mr. Hill is doing no work at all." (Mr. Hill stops pushing, but looks outraged). "In physiology, the bones have to move, driven by the muscles, for work to take place: it's not just the expenditure of energy sitting in one place, uselessly." (We're laughing too hard to hear the next point, I suppose, but we got that one). From College: In a dorm room with 5 other people, 4 in a heated conversation, Garth Coombs and I passing back and forth the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, making conversation by pointing to poets who said some of what we'd want to say. It started with Gregory Corso, "Should I Get Married?" From Business School: Listening to the stories of other people who are there: Hal Todd's story of interviewing with Neiman Marcus in Dallas comes to mind first: "I arrived and I was walking to my appointment. I saw so many women that were so well dressed, so well made up! I started at the makeup counter, I know what should be there. One was so beautiful I followed her for a while! Me, Arnold, me! Think about it.... I'm gay, and I'm following a woman." THEN I laughed. Not quick on the uptake, that day. From Law School: Dukeminier's Property Law class was at 10am. It was our first class of second semester. At 10:15, we wondered whether we were in the right place: no instructor. We had worked up quite a lather by 10:25, when he burst through the door, walked quickly down the aisle, grabbed a coat from a student's desk, went to the front of the classroom, held up the coat and said, "This is a great coat. It's mine!" The student replied, "No, it's mine!" Dukeminier said, "Can you prove it? Do you have the receipt? Does it have labels?" The rest of the class started arguing about whether that was the right thing to ask, and we were off, discussing ownership, property, and whose was what. From Fresno: A family filled house, as my brother's wedding approaches and I am the only person with a house for meeting, arguing, entertaining, and use as a base. My broth...Expand for more
er introducing his wedding party at the rehearsal dinner: "Just in case any of you think of objecting, I will have up with me my brother the lawyer, my cousin Fulton the race car driver, my cousin Doug who wins skeet shooting competitions, and my cousin Chip who sails large boats. You won't get away with it. 'Nuff said." From Los Angeles: Meeting my wife at my sister's repeated instigation, after calling her house and asking to speak to Karen (her name is Kathryn). Many poems, movies, and dinners later, marrying her. From Westlake Village: Taking the train in to Los Angeles so I have time to read the paper and plan on the way there and back as I watch my law practice be replaced by the Internet: not as good, but so much cheaper no one cares. Joy is born, and a new level of chaos and interest show up in my life. I learn business investment and real property investment in depth in an effort to find other sources of income. From Las Vegas: We have a small apartment overlooking the pool and central fountain, and one day in December there is snow falling on it. Where is global warming when I need it? From Westake Village: Kathryn has a "psychotic break" over a period of three days, and my brother in law, mother in law, and brother help manage things so I can check her into UCLA to find out about Huntington's Disease, and get her into Sunrise Assisted Living in Pacific Palisades. Spend a year depressed and losing weight, now attempting to wake up again. From Santa Monica: taking Joy to see Kathryn at Sunrise, arranging play dates for her (a necessary thing in West LA: there's very little public space, and it's poorly set up), getting her to school in the morning, attempting to keep up with her flow of questions and explorations, and create an appropriate business for someone whose schedule has odd interruptions (me). I meet a lot of people in Starbucks, with a Venti Cafe Latte Breve one splenda, which I almost pronounce right. From Pacific Palisades: watching Joy play soccer, skipping across the field to be with the other girls. From Atlanta, when Joy and I visit the Bells, watching Joy sit on the sculpture of an older couple, the lady holding the valentine, he holding the cane, and I remembering seeing that sculpture in Aspen, Colorado, on our honeymoon.
