Arpad's Story
School
Harrison Elementary, Lakewood, OHIO
1971
None of you will remember me because I was there only for kindergarten (one year) before my family moved back to Texas were I was born. If you have a Kindergarten class photo, I am fourth from the left, middle row. Between a boy and a girl. Surprisingly enough, I DO remember attending Harrison Elementary. I remember walking to school, in the snow. I remember the locker-room where we would shed our boots and jackets and gloves before entering the classroom.
Last year at Christmas, my mother presented me with a shoebox filled with a few things I made in school that year; like an inked imprint of my little hands and other crayon-drawn simple pictures. And a hand-written letter from my Teacher to my parents-something about bad behavior...who, ME?

Back to public school. Girls! Yahoo!
Freshman year: I decided to enjoy the experience of a Public School again. Participated in no athletics.
Sophomore year: walked-on to the Boys Waterpolo Team. I trained with the best team Holmes has ever had in the water. Nobody remembers it but We won the State Championship that year! I sat on the bench. But I was honored to be a part of that team. We had the best swimmers in the state at that time, and the best coach.
Later that year I realized I couldn't do the Butterfly and quit the Swim Team. in the spring I Walked-on to the Football Team. With Danny Vela as my mentor and friend That year I earned a spot on the Varsity Squad. Third string, but I was a walk-on. that summer June 28, 1982 my friend Danny Vela was killed in a head-on collision along with Paul Keyes. another dear friend I had known since Thunderbird Elem. I was devastated. Lost my focus. And in the fall I was demoted to the JV squad.
I endured my Junior year on the JV Football Squad. However we lost only one game in that season. We were 9-1-0. The following spring, I earned a spot on the Varsity Offense. Finally!
