Art's Story
After graduating from North High in 1965 I only stayed loose and free (that means aimless, unfocused)for about a year. I could smell the draft on my tail and could see the Army closing in over my shoulder, so I joined the Air Force, served four years, got two years of college during the evenings, and never got closer to Viet Nam than Alaska. I say that not out of pride, especially since so many did go to Viet Nam. I just couldn't see the purpose in the war, so I crafted a way around it. I got married while in the Air Force. Everyone around me did. And had my first child in 1970.
Afterward, I settled first in Sacramento, finished by BA there, then moved to Sonoma County where I lived for 38 years, raised a family, completed a couple of masters programs, skied, rock climbed, published some history work---and worked full time...Expand for more
for Sonoma County Mental Health where I ended up as Director for my last five years.
You can't live in Northern California and not be affected by alternative thoughts/ideas. So, Buddhist studies have impacted my life in great ways. My wife, Kathleen, (yes, I am married AGAIN) is a practicing Sufi. I am very happily retired. In fact, when recently offered the job of Acting Mental Health Director for Berkeley, I didn't hesitate in saying no. Maybe no surprise to many of you. Do I hear a "Duh" out there?
I live in Novato (Marin County) now. For fun I do storytelling, telemark skiing and am learning to sail.
I have three quite grown wonderful kids and became a grandparent for the first time this last August. Kathleen has three sons, so that make six kids between us.
Life is sweet. I can taste it daily. I hope you can too.
