Arthur's Story

In High School I was a band geek, playing trumpet at first and then tuba (sousaphone). I was on the staff of the radio station, WRHS, and The Revillier. I was also a writer for Rocket publications. Other than that, I wasn't really involved in too much else, and once I started working after school and weekends, life revolved around staying away from school as much as possible! I drove a blue 1964 Ford Galaxy 500. Life Now My Spouse After twenty-eight years my wife and I discovered that we had drifted apart and ended the marriage amicably. My Pets I have one cat. Pawvel is a two-year old grey tabby who rules the house. He is my little buddy! My Kids Becca, my 24-year old, is finishing her second masters degree this year and will be started medical school in the fall of 2013. She lives in Ft. Lauderdale FL. Rachael is 22 and is a single mom of a wonderful 2-1/2 year old daughter, Cady. Rach attends school part-time and works as a server at a BW3 in Greensboro NC. My Education I earned associate's and bachelor's degrees going to school part-time while in the Navy and working as a police officer. I went to law school full-time in my 30s on a full scholarship. I completed a master's degree in homeland security man...Expand for more
agement three years ago and just started an executive doctoral program that I hope to finish in 2015. My dissertation will look at the impact of the events of 9/11 on volunteers as force-multipliers to enhance community resilience. My Job Which one? I spent 8 years on active duty in the Navy, worked as a trauma and critical care nurse, was a police officer and federal investigator, a federal trial attorney and prosecutor, private-practice litigator, and federal administrative law judge (including five years as chief judge at HUD and 4 years as an associate chief judge in the Medicare provider appeals system). While in Washington DC with HUD, I volunteered for and was detailed to the September 11 Victims Compensation Fund. I heard appeals of financial awards brought by the families of the 9/11 terrorist attacks for about a year, traveling between DC and NYC. I also became a mission-certified search and rescue pilot as a volunteer gig. I started teaching and designing graduate courses in homeland security and emergency management in 2010 and am an adjunct associate professor. I plan to transition to full-time academia when I finish my doctorate, retiring from the federal government with more than 30 years of service.
