Arthur's Story

I guess "what a long strange trip it's been" fits for obvious and some not so obvious reasons.............. If I had to sum up what I learned in High School, is that life is about good times, good friends and good memories - anybody that knows me would know that academics were not part of the experience.............. So off I went to work in the real world first as a cook and then as the chef of several restaurants. It was hard work, but I loved the creativity and the accolades of being a chef........... But a restaurant is a business and I was not prepared for the numbers side of the business. So I started taking some business courses part time at Fullerton Jr. College........... This is where one of the strange parts comes in; I soaked up the courses like a sponge. I don't think I ever received an A in any course in High School, to anyone that knew me, that would not be a surprise. My first accounting course (that's right accounting) had 400 points possible and I finished with 400 points. After about 3 years I had completed my Associates degree with a 3.6 GPA. The grades got me accepted to the Cal Poly Pomona Business School........... June of 1983 was a big month for me. First I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, a week later a got married (to my first wife) and another week later I started work with a large CPA firm in West Covina........... In November of 1983 I took the CPA exam. I passed four of five parts on my first try and passed the final part in May of 1984. That assured that I would be able to complete the two years slave labor with a CPA firm to be licensed as a CPA. In December of 1985 I received my CPA license........... In May of 1986 my daughter, Chelsi was born. Later that year I took a position with Alta-Dena Dairy as an accountant........... In February of 1988 my son, Arthur IV was born........... The next strange twist happened in September of 1990 my first wife decided that being married (at least to me) with two kids was not what she wanted........... I became a single dad with two kids, ages two and four and a full time career. The next two years were very hard. A typical weekday went like this, up at 5, out the door with two kids at 6, ...Expand for more
preschool drop off at 7, work at 8, off work at 5, pickup the kids at 6, home by 7, dinner at 7:30 and kids in bed at 9. But I had every other weekend off when the kids would go visit their biological mother........... In June of 1992, Diana, one of my co-workers at Alta-Dena Dairy told me she had accepted a position with another company. I asked her if she would like to meet for a drink after work that day. We had a nice time and we said we would stay in touch (how many times do people say that). The truth was, I thought she was fabulous and we had a lot in common. I gave it a few weeks and then I called to see how the new job was going (it was a good excuse anyway). I asked her if she would like to meet me for a drink. We had another nice time, but this time when I walked her to her car, I gave her a quick kiss. I would like to say she just melted into my arms, but the look was more one of shock. Had I just lost a friend or could there be something more? Sometimes you just have to jump off that cliff to see. Sixteen years later, Diana is my wife; partner and best friend (thank God I made that jump). Through good times and some hard times we have grown closer and closer........... We started my CPA practice in 1993. The practice has done well.......... Today, the kids have moved out. We have a second home on the beach in Mazatlan, Mexico. We travel often. In 2005 we went to Dublin, Ireland to see U2. In August of 2007 we were in London, England to see the last three Rolling Stones shows at the end of their Bigger Bang tour and three weeks later I was in Asbury Park, New Jersey to see Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band rehearse before the start of the Magic tour........... In November 2007 we had 70 of our friends down to our house in Mazatlan, Mexico to celebrate Diana's 50th birthday and what a party it was. The food was a fantastic Mexican BBQ, we had our master mixologist and maker of the best margarita in the world, Angel, as the lead bartender, a 8 person mariachi band, a complete aerial and ground fireworks show, an adult piñata and I did the late night music from my iphone including disco lighting and fog..........
