Ashley's Story
Life
Latest Update: We have finished grad school and have left Seattle. I am studying for the July 2008 bar exam and staying home with my three month old--Hugo. We are back in Virginia and we now live in Richmond. Look us up when you are in the area (Tim Hamnett and Ashley Payne--I did keep my last name). Also, I have decided to open my own practice in Estate Planning and Elder Law and I will travel for my clients, so if you or anyone you know needs estate planning services please contact me.
Wow! I have come a long way since high school. I spent a few years at East Carolina University, but the partying was interfering with my studying. I decided to take some time off to collect myself. For six years I worked all sorts of fun jobs (kayaking and rafting in the Smoky Mountains of NC, music & video sales and rentals in Boone, NC, watersports rentals and sailing lessons in the British Virgin Islands, charter boat crew on sailboats in the Caribbean, sailboat delivery from Maine to Antigua via Bermuda, bookseller in Seattle) before I went back to school at the University of Washington in Seattle. I earned my bachelors in 2003 in philosophy. I married Tim Hamnett (Mr. Wonderful) in September of 2000. We met at the Kayaking & Rafting place in NC. We adopted our sweet dog Ellie in July of 2002. We moved to Florida in 2003 for graduate school (Tim in architecture, me in Landscape Architecture). I didn't like my program, as I really wanted to practice law. Now I'm about to begin law school at the University of Washington [UW], and Tim will finish his arc...Expand for more
hitecture program here at UW. We are excited to be back in Seattle--love the urban life that is so close to the Great Outdoors. We stop by the coffee shop to get our espresso before heading to the mountains for a hike or to go skiing or snowboarding. We don't have any kids yet, but maybe someday soon. I miss my friends from high school, but am oftentimes embarassed to keep in touch, as I was a regular party girl during that time. I am no longer a party girl, but still like to have good times through being active in sports, clubs, volunteering, listening to music, wine tasting, cooking delicious meals, and sailing.
School
Biggest crush--Steve Morrison (who sadly passed away while playing rugby when I was a freshman at ECU). Teacher that inspired me--Ms. Bates who nearly hacked up a lung while reading Whitman to our class. If I could do it all over again?--I would have studied more, steered clear of the party scene, played piano, joined the field hockey or soccer team.
College
I transferred from East Carolina to University of Washington in Seattle, after 5 years away from school. I earned by bachelors in 2003, the first person in my family to earn a college degree! At various times I thought I wanted to be an economist, physicist, philosopher, fisheries biologist, documentary filmmaker, journalist, and landscape architect. I have now decided that I want to be a lawyer. I am beginning law school this fall (2005) at the University of Washington. I hope to practice in criminal law (as a prosecutor) or as a real estate attorney or in estates and trusts.
