Ashley's Story
Life
After graduation, the following September I went to cosmetology school. From there I went on to apprentice then work as a stylist at Mario Tricoci on the Plaza. I worked for them up until I left K.C. in 2001. I moved to New York in September just 5 days before 9/11. What a welcome wagon. My roomates and I were all a little freaked and a few of them went back to where they were from. Despite alot of drama I stuck it out. The first year or so was a challenge...I definently have some stories. After that things mellowed out a bit but it was still a little caotic. This fall will mark my sixth year here in NYC and for the most part everything is smooth sailing. I share an apartment with my boyfriend and another couple, and as strange as it sounds this has been the best living situation so far. omeone respond to an add on craigslist one day and move in the next. It's been a wild ride, but I would not trade it for the world. The people I have met and the experiences I've had have left a colorful mark on my life, and I think I'm a better person because of it. People often say that it was so couragous of me to come out here, and that it's something they could never do...but the fact is it was what I needed to do to survive, it was instinct. I took a big risk, I followed my heart and now my happiness is the reward for all the struggle and perserverance. The one thing that I can say is life is not about were you live and what you have accomplished as much as it is about who you are and being okay with that. Life is a series of fleeting moments, like grains of sand slipping through our fingers...Time stops for noone, so you have to live your life in the moment, take risk, follow your heart, and go after your dreams. Tomorrow is a word not a promise. Life, even a long one is short so you gotta make it count, have no regrets, and leave this world better than you found it!
