Astrid V.'s Story

In the early 1970s--before studying Fine Arts and French at York University--I went to high school in North York, Toronto. At Newtonbrook Secondary School, my favourite memories were times with friends in theatre arts, physics and math. Before high school, we were on the move almost every year. It started with a one-room school-house in northern Ontario, Canada, in 1962. Victoria Township public school had only grades 1-5. It no longer exists, but it sat at the north-east corner of Highway 17 and Mailloux Road, just east of Spanish. (My name in Grade 1 was "Virpi," but after that I used my other name "Astrid"). Too many elementary public schools to remember for the rest of grade 1 and through grade 2, but have vague memories of schools in Toronto and one in Elliot Lake, Ontario, the year JFK was shot. I don't actually remember the name of the school in Elliot Lake or know whether it even exists anymore. On the other hand, Huron Street Public School still exists in the "Annex" in Toronto. de 3 were with my best friend Angela. Between 1965 and 1969, we moved to Sweden for four years and lived in the twin cities of Jonkoping and Huskvarna where I went to Swedish public schools ("ja, jag talar svenska"). Although we were not Swedish, the country is still dear to my heart. Back in Canada, I had so much fun living near Bala in Muskoka, Ontario, and went to another school there that no longer exists: South Muskoka Senior Public School. The school only had four classrooms: two for grade 7 students and two for grade 8. Life settled down in 1970 when we returned to Toronto, Ontario, and we no longer moved around as much. I finished grade 9 at R.J. Lang Junior High in North York, Toronto, and then continued at Newtonbrook for high school. Today, I am remarried and living in Muskoka. My husband has two grown sons, and I have three daughters in their late 20s, all living across the country. We also keep in touch with our children, relatives, and friends on Facebook. Otherwise, we just take life one precious day at a time.
