Audrey's Story
Life
I spend my time with my husband, sons, and friends, or pursue hobbies like reading, cooking, gardening, knitting, photography and writing.
I live in a townhouse in Portland that I rent with my husband, Milad. We have a small garden with some herbs and flowerss. We both like to cook also. We both like music and play some instruments. I have a piano and Milad plays the magarona (a middle-eastern reed instrument similar to the bagpipes) and the darbuka (a middle-eastern drum).
On weekends we sleep in late(if the kids will let us) and then go out for coffee at some of the cafes near our home. Then we try to catch up on chores, or visit friends, shop, garden, or pursue our hobbies. I'm knitting a scarf right now.
School
I hated high school, except for band and art. Band was fun. Most of my friends were in band, and it was first thing in the morning. And we didn't have to watch Channel One. Modern Lit was good too. Art was good. Lunch really sucked.
College
There were a lot of group projects and late nights writing papers. I still managed to go to a lot of concerts and hang out with my new friends. And I got good grades, of course.
College wasn't a smooth ride, but I made it through. I found a way to get through even though I didn't have a lot of help along the way. First I went to U of P for 1.5 years, and got all the basics out of the way. I had a really good GPA, and studied really hard. I played in the band and pep band and went to all the basketball games. Being a trombone player I was right in the front row.
The second year at U of P I was broke so I had to quit after the fall term and go to work. But I still studied hard and got excellent grades that term.
I got a job and worked full time for a year and applied to go to PSU the next fall. I saved every penny I earned and used it to subsidize my part-time income over the next 3 years while I finished college. They didn't have dorms, so I had to ...Expand for more
rent a cheap apartment in the 'hood. It was a tiny studio in an ancient building with improper wiring and crazy neighbors, down near the train yards.
I finished a double major in Human Resources and General Management after changing my major about 3 times. The workload was not as demanding at PSU as at U of P. There was a wider variety of classes to choose from, though. I took some Asian Studies classes and lots of finance classes. Organic gardening, tango, swing, and art were some electives I tried.
Workplace
I worked a Steinfelds pickle factory a few summers while I was in high school and detested it. It didn't pay well either. Now I've worked at the same company, AirWair USA, since I got out of high school. First I started as a temp doing warehouse work and just worked summers. There was a lot of overtime and weekends, so I earned a lot of money. I met a lot of nice people, including my first boyfriend. He was hot!
I had to quit college because I was broke, so I got a full time job at AirWair and worked like a dog for the next 9 months and saved every penny I earned to go back to college. I moved back home and I rarely went out. It was really depressing.
College started in the fall and I continued to work at AirWair part time, and full time during the summer. I rented a cheap studio in a bad neighborhood half way between work and school. It worked out really well. I worked swing shift, so I could take classes in the morning and go to work for a full shift in the afternoon.
I graduated from college in 2000 and got a full-time job in the Customer Service department answering emails and monitoring the websites. I'm now the senior customer service rep for the E-commerce division. The people are fun and the atmosphere is relaxed. The bosses are easy-going, it pays my bills, so I think I'll stay here for a while. And it's downtown in the Pearl district, which is great for shopping and dining out.
