Barbara's Story
Life
English major/Art minor. M.S. in High School Guidance and Counseling. Taught English/Communications/Film at Schaumburg H.S. for 32 years. (Yearbook sponsor, cheerleading coach and pom coach several different times.) I always wanted to be a writer, an actress or a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought those choices were fitting. As it turns out, in my teaching area, I was able to encompass all of those interests.
College
I followed in my brother's footsteps to a small, private college in Minnesota...what was I thinking?! Boring, restrictive, and COLD! etters, their clamoring awakening my roommate and me. We filled our wastebaskets with water to dump on them, but were foiled when they succeeded in dousing us instead! Now if I'd only had some money and a car back then.... And if I really had it to do over again, I'd choose a school in a warm climate!
Retired from teaching June, 2005. Moved out of state to the South, near my son's family. Spend some months in Florida every winter.
The biggest surprise of my life was that I never dreamed I'd become a single parent and remain so for nearly 40 years. It was challenging and I had lonely times, but the experience was character-building and taught me a lot -- about life, about what is truly important, and about how to create your own happiness. My son has been the greatest blessing in my life. If I had one "do-over", I'd have waited longer to get married. But every cloud has a silver lining, and that silver is my son and now my grandchildren!
Ten years from now, I just hope to be healthy, active and still happy.
