Barb's Story

Life I was married to Wayne Korb (RHS-1969) in 1971 and was divorced from him in 1983. We had two children together, a daughter Yvette born in 1972 and a son Christopher (CJ) born in 1975. Wayne died from esophageal cancer at 46 in 1997. I was also married to Mike Gallagher (RHS-1964) in 1985 and divorced him in 1996. I worked for Ralph E. Sweeney, Jr., MD, an orthopedic spine & knee surgeon, in Westfield from 1996-2001. I also worked at Dembling's Grocery Store, Charlie Brenner's Sports Shop and Thompson's Country Store, all in Rahway. I was an Avon Rep for 20 years in Clark. I also worked in the school cafeterias in Clark for a few years and at a print shop in Clark for several years. I got my realtor license and briefly worked as a realtor in Clark, but it just wasn't my cup of tea! After the loss of my Mom early in 2001 and living in Clark for 21 years, I moved to Carlsbad, CA early in 2002 to be closer to my son Chris (CJ). I bought a beautiful home there and the Pacific Ocean is only minutes away! Who could ask for more? I'm very happy in CA. I never, ever thought I'd be lucky enough to live so close to the ocean! My dream became a reality! In California, I was briefly employed as an instructor of medical billing & medical secretary in San Marcos, CA. I was offered a much better position at a collection agency in 2005, in Carlsbad, CA, and worked there until 2012. Some health issues forced me to take an early retirement, not willingly! Keeping busy is the secret to a successful retirement. I have been smoke-free since New Year's Eve 2002, which was a big challenge for me! I quit cold turkey, all by myself! I had a pair of all-black Scottish Terriers, that I named Mac and Annie. They were such cuties and had four litters of beautiful puppies. Both Mac and Annie have crossed over The Rainbow Bridge. I miss them both so much! I kept a female puppy from their 3rd litter named Betty. She turned 15 on 10/15/2023. I also kept a male puppy from the 4th litter named MacDuff. He crossed over The Rainbow Bridge when he was 10 years old. I miss MacDuff, as well! I added an all-white female rescue Staff mix to my family. Her name is Star and she's a little love bug. Star is 4 years old. Betty and Star get along with each other nicely. My son Chris (CJ) Korb (ALJ-1993) was in the USMC (FAST Co.) for 4 years and serve...Expand for more
d time overseas in Somalia and Iraq. He also lives in Carlsbad, CA. He recently did a 2 month road trip of the southern USA with his service dog Punky. My daughter Yvette Korb (ALJ-1990) was a flight attendant for Tower Air, out of JFK in NY. She died in 1996. I dearly miss her and she will live on, forever, in my heart! I'd love to hear from all my former Clark Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Little Leaguers, Pop Warner players, basketball players and also my RHS alumni! I've survived the Covid-19 pandemic and I'm fully vaccinated. I despise wearing a mask! School Driving all over in my 1963 Chevy Impala convertible with the top down, even in the winter, sticks in my mind like it was yesterday! Smokin' in the girls' room at RHS. Hanging out at Seaside, during school hours. Going to Staten Island on Friday or Saturday nights, sometimes both! Frequent trips to The Filmore East in NYC. My engagement to Wayne in my senior year. Not being able to go to my senior prom, because Wayne couldn't get leave! Going to Woodstock! Working at Dembling's in the deli all of my high school years and up until I was married in 1971. Military I was a Navy Wife from 1971-1983 and was very active in the Navy Wives Club. Wayne and I were stationed on Guam from 1971-1974 (Naval Communication Station) and again from 1978-1981 (Naval Station). We loved it there with all of it's tropical splendor. My daughter Yvette was born on Guam. We were stationed in San Francisco, CA, briefly, from 1974-1975 (Treasure Island) and lived at Presidio Army Base. There was a bird's eye view of the Golden Gate Bridge from our house! The fog there was unbelievable! We survived North Chicago, IL from 1975-1978 (Great Lakes Naval Training Station) and lived on base. The winters there were so cold and brutal! The summers were hot and sticky. Wayne was an E.T. instructor at the base school. Wayne and I were very active in the Laker-Breaker CB Radio Club there. We had a lot of fun on fox hunts with the club and a few camp-outs. In 1981 we relocated back home to NJ. We moved into my grandparent's old home on Kathryn St. in Clark. Wayne was a Navy recruiter in Staten Island, NY, after attending recruiter school in Pensicola, FL. From there, Wayne was stationed in the Washington, DC area & never returned home to Yvette, Chris & me, thus ended my life as a Navy Wife.
