Barbara's Story
Since graduating in 1968 I've earned three degrees, and been married twice (the last time has stuck--our 40th wedding anniversary will be in April 2024). I've taught at many universities in communication studies, including 23 years at the University of Central Missouri before retiring from that university in December 2011. I've also taught outside the U.S. twice, and traveled all over the U.S. (I've been to every state except Alaska and Hawaii). Gregg and I have family scattered everywhere, but especially in the southwest and west. In early 2013, we moved back to the Dallas area, where I still have friends from high school and college, as well as relatives (although Mexico and California still tempt us). For two years I taught part-time for Collin Community college (on both the Plano and Frisco campuses), while continuing to teach on-line for UCM. In fall 2014 I started teaching communication classes at the University of Texas, Dallas in Richardson.. I am still teaching at UTD in 2023.
More on Schools
As an "AF brat," I attended many elementary schools. The first was Simon School in Washington, D.C., where I attended kindergarten through 2nd grade. Then Marlboro school, then Andrews AFB school, before moving to Dallas, TX. where I started at Arthur Kramer in January 1961. In the 8th grade, I went to Ben Franklin Junior High, where I still remember the fight song ("Fly High Falcons"). Finally, I wound up at Hillcrest High School, where I graduated in 1968.

on in 1968, I attended North Texas State (now Univ. of North Texas) during a time of social upheaval. Eventually I earned two degrees--a B.S. Ed (History & Drama teaching fields) and a M.S. (Speech Communication). After that I went to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where I earned a Ph.D. in Communication (Rhetoric & Film). I won a national award for my dissertation, on the first "Star Wars" trilogy and first two "Indiana Jones" films.
More on Workplaces
I've taught at numerous colleges over the years, including part time in California (as a freeway flyer). In 1988, I started teaching at the University of Central Missouri (formerly Central Missouri State Univ.), eventually becoming a full tenured professor in the Communication dept. (and for 13 years was also the Graduate Coordinator for the dept.). I retired from UCM in 2011, becoming an emerita professor (teaching courses on-line part time as an adjunct).. During my career, I taught classes in film, media, gender studies, and communication theory. In 1994 I taught a semester at the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, Wales, U.K. (near Cardiff). In 2003 I taught a semester at Monterrey Tec, Campus Estado de Mexico, in Atizapan, Mexico (a suburb of Mexico City). I also taught as an adjunct for Collin College in the Dallas area (basic communication courses). Currently, I am teaching basic communication courses for University of Texas at Dallas. I've also traveled widely delivering research papers, etc. at professional conferences.
