Barbara's Story
MOST MEMORABLE TIMES
In 1972 my late husband and I were given the opportunity to be extras in the movie American Graffiti. Most of you probably can relate to the story and have seen the movie. We owned a black 1948 Ford Coupe that was used in many of the street scenes and if you look real hard you can catch glimpses of it. We were able to drive the car ourselves each night. Scenes were shot from the time it got dark until the sun started to rise which made for a hectic schedule for about 2 weeks - work all day, rush to drive to San Rafeal CA, drive the car around, rush home, get about 2 hours sleep, then start all over again. A friend owned the yellow 1964(?) yellow Corvette and a 1930 something yellow Ford truck which were quite visable also. The friend and my husband also played extras in the lead-in-shots for the police car that stopped Harrison Ford. Oue friend is the passenger policeman in the car when axle is pulled from under the police car. They also spent several hours chauffering around MacKenzie Phillips and Suzanne Somers. We were fortunate to rub elbows with all the cast members, essentially before they were famous, plus met Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas at the premier showing for cast and crew.
WORKPLACE
Started out to be a teacher and ended up in the computer field in 1964 as a keypunch operator in Everett WA. From there moved to CA and for 26 years advanced from a data entry operator to systems analyst with the help of a little college. Saw the computer industry change from rooms full of machines to the small desktops we use today. The places I worked were alway state of the art. Worked on or with some of the most advanced systems of the times - IBM1600, IBM360, 370, System36, AS400 and others
Moved to the midwest (MN) to a small town where there wasn't much call for an analyst so fell back on my minor in accounting and continued in that field until moving back to my home last year (2006) and as of now am retired. I did work at some interesting places while in Minnesota - First was Step Inc which was an adult day training and habilitation center for the mentally challenged. The people there tugged at my heart strings. Each day was a ...Expand for more
challenge for me too. There was one women that was so disfigured that at first I found it hard to look at her but by the time I left 6 years later I cried. She would come in every morning and visit me in my office and hug me for several minutes or when she was upset she would cry on my shoulder. She could not talk, only made noises, so our conversations where a little one sided. She made noises, though, that you learned to interrupt and she understood what I was saying. Then there was this fellow that was my age - I was June Carter to him and he was Johnny Cash. Got hugs from him too. Every day was different. Some of the clients were violent - was hit, bit, cursed at, clothes lined, kicked, and chased on many occasons but all in all it made me a better person.
The other memorable job was with the West Martin Weekly News/Polly's Printery. I started work there as the bookkeeper and when I left I was the publisher, editor, bookkeeper, and printer. The newspaper was sold so I lost my job. My husband was glad - it had became my life. 70 to 90 hours a week. But, I learned alot. Everything from graphic design (for both businesses) to newspaper page layout. Was usually pretty tired most of the time but enjoyed using my artist abilities as well as analytical.
MY LIFE IN GENERAL
I have had a pretty full life - travelled the world - was an Air Force brat. Lived in Germany in the early fifties and visited England, France, Bavaria; lived in Alaska in the late fifties and early sixties. What an amazing state with its long summer days. You could mow your grass at 2 in the morning. When my dad was transferred and we had to leave I cried from Fairbanks all the way to Seattle. I have lived in Washington state, Pennsylvania, California, Minnesota, Alaska and visited in probably 40 of the 50 states. I've been married to my present husband for 21 years and have a blended family of 4 children (2 his, 2 mine). I was married the first time for 22 years to a devoted fireman and our son has followed in his father's footsteps. Our children have given us 11 grandchildren and 2 granddogs. Unfortunately they all live in other states, so we don't see them as often as we would like.
