Barbara C's Story
After I graduated in 1981, I spent that summer at home and then moved up to the Sacramento area, to attend American River Junior College, while living with my aunt and uncle. I worked full-time where my aunt was employed, (Washington Inventory Service,) and took a full load at school. I could only stand that arrangement for six months before moving back to Cayucos. After I got back home, I was always lucky in finding better jobs, (ie. working at RESLOC - Real Estate of SLO County newspaper as a typesetter in Morro Bay; Easy Ad (SLO town) working as a typesetter and layout person; Youngs Giant Food grocery store in Morro Bay as a cashier; Riley's Dept Store in Accounts Receivable, SLO town; and then started working with the County of SLO General Services in the print shop, operating a high speed Xerox copying machine, producing County forms and doing some bindery work; then after a year and a half of doing that, I transferred to the Auditor- Controller's office and worked in three different positions over a 21 year span; and then transferred over to the Probation Dept a year ago last June and now I'm in charge of paying their bills and ordering all of their office supplies and safety equipment.)
Since I never got married and didn't feel the need to have any kids, I spent the majority of my free time travelling all over the place. Working from west to east, I've been to Hawaii 3 times; an Alaskan cruise; a trip with Amy and Carol Ann to Banff, Alberta, Canada; a cattle drive in Montana (I'd like for both Tony and I to go up there and do it as a couple one day in the future - it was a HOOT having your own guide to go riding with you whenever you want to, or have a guide teach you how to drive a team of Belgian horses in a covered wagon, sleep in teepees every night, get 3 chuckwagon meals a day, use up your alcoholic drink coupons each day-only to buy more the next day, listen to live bands and dance every night under the big top, then participate in a rodeo when you end up back in Broadas, which is located in the southeast corner of the state - you definitely need to Google the Powder River Cattle Drive and check it out for yourselves;) Washington; Oregon; cruise to Mexico; drove to Queens Creek & Green Valley, Arizona several months ago to visit Tony's daughter and her two kids and to visit my cousins and Great Aunt; Hot Springs, Arkansas; New Orleans (a few years before Katrina hit;) New England during the fall foliage; and last but not least, Ireland. The places that are still on my list of places to see before I die are Costa Rica (zipline through the canopies;)...Expand for more
Bali; New Zealand; Scotland; train trip through the Alps; south of France; Italy; and last but not least, Greece.
I would consider myself to be somewhat adventurous. But I still can't imagine jumping out of a perfectly well built airplane. I have a feeling that after I attempt that first jump, I'll probably pass out and wake only seconds before I'm splattered on the ground. The only way I would do it, is in a tamdom jump with Lisa Brigg's strapped to my back. I did a submarine ride off the coast of Honolulu and found that very exciting. If I can get past the fear of relying on a hose for my air, I would like to learn how to scuba dive. Do to me having lower back problems, I'll have to pass on bungee jumping, though. I have contemplated the thought of getting my pilots license one day, since I love to fly and maybe try a glider ride on my next birthday.
While attending the last highschool reunion three years ago, I reconnected with Tony Phimister and we've been living together for the last 2 1/2 years now. He drives a walking floor tractor trailer and operates heavy equipment for Chicago Grade Landfill in Atascadero.
We love to travel, camp in our camper, take photos, go fishing, go 4-wheeling in Tony's CJ-5 Jeep, kayaking in Morro Bay, bike riding, hiking, theatre performances at the Melodrama in Oceano and the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly, get together with friends, or visit Tony's three grandchildren who live in Cheney, Kansas.
From here on down, are answers to the Story Wizards questions.
The wildest thing I was ever involved with, was attending Mandy Holbrook's party.
I guess I would have to say that John Wayne is my hero, because he reminds me of my dad. My dad passed away in 1995 at the age of 75. He and I were very close and I used to go commercial fishing with him during my highschool summers for two weeks at a time and 200 miles offshore, fishing for salmon, tuna and shrimp in between the areas of the Oregon coast and all the way down off of Baja, CA. Amy and Carol Ann didn't care for it as much as I did. I loved watching all that the ocean had to offer: all types of marine life and many different types of boats and ships.
I used to love to play tennis, but with my low back problems, I can't run after the ball like I used to.
As far as life not turning out the way I wanted, my biggest surprise is that I never married.
If I had the chance to do one thing over, I wish I could go back to college and become a marine biologist.
In 8 years, I hope to be fully retired. By then, I'll be 52 and will have had 31 years in with the County of SLO.
