Barbara's Story
My name in school was Faye (my first name is Barbara) Hand. I got married my senior year and did not return to school until I was 29 years old and had 4 children. I did this after obtaining a GED. I then got my Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education. Later I mastered in Administration/Supervision but decided that was not for me. So...I completed an add-on certificate to my Master's Degree. By then, I was burned out on higher education. I decided to just enjoy teaching and did so for many years. However, the day I reached 60, I retired (with 24.444 years experience). During this time, I taught mostly math, although I also taught language arts, science, social sciences, and even P.E. once. I love retirement. I never want full time employment again. I can now travel, entertain company (which is mostly family), enjoy being a grandmother (of 8), garden (gather, can, and freeze), cut grass (yes, I really enjoy doing this), keep my house clean, COOK, and generally take care of things that I could not think of when I was working 12 hours a day. I can even watch Television until 2:00 in the morning. Wow!
I love learning new things and seeing new places. I haven't yet been to Europe, but that is definitely on my list.
I am not a big "shopper" unless I am shopping for a purpose or with my sister, Jean. She has a way of getting me interested in shopping for new looks. She and I do lots of things together! We always have fun no matter what we do.
I have three wonderful sisters, Charlotte, Jean, and Pat. I have no brothers although I always wanted one.
My husband, Don Cain, is sweet, funny, and wonderful to me. He says things like, "have I told you that you are beautiful today?". If I say "NO", ...Expand for more
he replies, "Shame on me because you are!" If I say "Yes", he says, "Well good! I should have, and let me tell you again." Now...how cool is that? He is quite good looking himself.
Jean still lives in Mobile, (actually Grand Bay) and I plan to visit her soon. If any of you are still there and would like to meet again, I will be there on the 13th (Sunday). She and I are planning a trip together, so we will be leaving on the 14th and won't be back until the 27th. Just write me a note, and I will get in touch with you. I would love to see some of my old classmates. I haven't seen any of you since I got married and left school.
I saw some of your names on FACEBOOK and sent notes to you. You may not have recognized me as Barbara, but would definitely know me as Faye.
Linda Bonner and Diane Mason...if you two are out there and read this, I would particularly love hearing from you. I found you, Linda, and sent you an e-mail request. I do not know your last name, Diane. I did hear that you were a teacher, also. We had some great times in school. I am sad that we lost touch.
I was a cheerleader and remember Beverly and Bonnie Bell very well. I also remember Mary Ann Alverson. I remember John Sellers and Linda Bianco. I had a crush on John in 7th grade. I also had a crush on Tommy Faison. I wore Leo Hager's jacket for a while when he first arrived at Baker. All the girls thought he was cute. That did not last long for me. Oh, well. Isn't it strange and funny how we remember things from our young and innocent days?
If anyone is out there and wants to know more about me, just send me a note and I will respond. Tell me something about you, too.
Until then...waiting to hear from you!!!
