Barbara's Story
Life
Came back to Lincoln after living and working away for fifteen years. Nowadays I'm an empty nester, and fairly content to be so. One current roommates, of the four-legged variety. A 15 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.
My only son and his wife live in town: close enough to visit from time to time, but far enough away to not be tempted to drop in unannounced. He recently returned from serving in OIF (Iraq).
Divorced after 22 years of marriage. Those kinds of story are long and complex and won't fit in the character limit, so I won't try.
School
I loved school, thought I was good at it, was probably pretty smug about my intelligence and chances in high school. Life teaches greater lessons than that.
Favorite HS teachers were Mr. Wohlers (so sorry when he passed away young), Mr. (make that Dr.) Thomas, and good ol' Mr. Hunter. And many, many, many more.
College
I took 14 years from that high school diploma to my BS at UNL in computer science. I was a part-time student, dropping in and out of school. At the time they started calling...Expand for more
us "non-traditional students". In between I worked at Lincoln Telephone, got married, and had a son.
I later took a couple of classes remotely from Syracuse University in New York.
Workplace
Lincoln Telephone was a great going to school job, and a great growing up job.
IBM was my dream job, and I loved working there. I thought I had died and gone to heaven, in that I was now being paid for doing things I paid for the privilege of doing for 14 years while going to UNL off and on.
Cap Gemini was stop-gap, and part of an aborted attempt to get back to the mid-west.
Platinum Technology / Computer Associates was an adventure and involved travel, many different career experiences, and I loved what I learned and did. But it was also exhausting, so I was glad to make a change to stay local in Lincoln, to give a bit more stability to my family life.
Military
No direct military experience, but I was married to a Viet Nam vet with a purple heart, and we raised a son who joined the Army Reserves in 2006, during a time of conflict. Who'd have thought it?
