Barbara's Story
Hi Dear Friends,
I was bornin 1945 on Pacific Avenue and lived on Dewey Place until 1959. Loved the inlet summers, and have 4 friends from those years, still close to me. I went to Mass Avenue school: the candy store on the way, playleader, Lt of the safety patrol-- shoe polished my harness every day. Loved Ms. Martin for music and Mr. M (?) for gym. spent a fair amount of time in Miss Blume's cloakroom for talking too much, remember my beloved friend Sandy Fralich and Norman Gasbarro the year we spent making a map of the US national parks, with electricity and lights, no less! What a beautiful building the school was. I remember ducking and covering in the hallways in the basement in air raid raid drill. And lots, lots of laughter.
Jr. High at Central. Sandy and I loved every minute ofit. Once we ran a freexe tag game for what seemed like the whole school. And didn't we all love the magical wooden track above the gym?
ACHS, brought me Dobs and friends and real learning: Odyssey,...Expand for more
Ivanhoe, all the English novels with Miss French, Ms Carter whose Shakespeare quotes we had to memorize have stayed with me all of my life, in times of need especially. She taught me to be strong. Latin and Spanish, Miss Molinari, my hero, as she was for eveyone, in geometry, and in life.
Went to BU and loved Boston. Degrees in English. Became a professor of. After years, I added poetry to the meaning of my life. I married my high school sweetheart, Norman, and we made two grand sons. And they have made four children between them. He left the family after 32 years. How very modern of him. I have published five books of poetry, continue to teach as a Visitng Scholar, Harvard at the moment, and direct my own school for publishing writers. You can find me on the web, under the business name: PoemWorks.
I'd love to hear from some, any, all, of my Alantic City pals. I don't go there often anymore, but I, who have traveled much of this world, have never found a beach I've loved as much!
