Jocelain's Story
Well, for those of you who think you may remember me, I have to explain that I changed my name a few years ago. I went from Barbara-Jo Stuart to Jocelain B. Hitchcox. I had never really "felt" like it suited me, and as I got older this feeling increased. I lived with every possible variation of the old name, lastly Jo; it never felt right. When my Dad had his 85th birthday, he declared that his one regret in life had been that he had never changed his name (Clarence Melvin Stuart, who can blame him?). I decided that was the green light I was waiting for, and went through a lengthy careful process to change mine. I don't explain this to everyone I know, but those who have a history with me may appreciate some insight. That said, I REALLY appreciate having my new name used; it means a lot to me!
I left Val d'Or when I was 13, and my brother Bob was 11, in 1965. We were halfway through the school year, and moved a grade forward. It was culture shock for both of us, trying to settle into winter in London Ontario. We both remember having snowballs with rocks in them thrown at as, as our new neighbours taunted us. School wasn't difficult, but being in with girls who had started dating, while I was still playing with my Barbie dolls was a challenge. The one friend I made that first year moved away to Nigeria for two years.

rniture store in Val d'Or, and it was the age of boutiques starting up. He even hired a go-go dancer to dance at the back and attract customers.
In time I left London for Ottawa, where I lived for a couple of years. I didn't finish high school. I was supremely distracted by the events of the sixties, and apologize to no one for thinking of myself as one of the hippies of the time! I resurfaced in Toronto in 1977, and have been here ever since. In 1980 I went to Humber College and studied Interior Design. I returned there about 5 years later to teach. I married my husband Steve in 1990, the same year you had your last reunion, and we went to Val d'Or for part of our honeymoon, having just missed the reunion! Then in 1993 I had my son Holt at 41, stayed home for 7 years with him, and started working part-time at IKEA. I've been there for almost 8 years now, planning kitchens. Full circle: back in a furniture store, can you believe it?!
I'd love to hear from anyone who is interested in keeping in touch. Because my memory is fading (blame it on the 60's) it's awesome when you post a picture on your profile, or at least some of your own details. I have found that some people want to connect, but give no clues as to their history or connection. Thus, I let my membership lapse in favour of facebook in the last few years. But I'm back, and so excited to see you all again, if we can pull off this reunion in June!
