Barbara's Story

I moved to Barberton in 1960 when I was about 6 weeks old. Myself, parents and older siblings moved from Doylestown, Ohio. I went to Lincoln Elementary,(I cried when they tore down Lincoln because, I had to go to Memorial school for the last year of elementary , plus I only lived 3 blocks from Lincoln that was r playground even when school was out for the summer), Memorial, U. L. Light Jr. High and Barberton High School. I lived in Barberton until October of 1980. Then moved to Arkansas with my husband Jim Johnson, (Class of 1977 Barberton High School), and two sons. I worked full time in a factory for 24 + years, ( this's the same factory that made all of our desk and chairs that we sat in all through school). I went to school and became a CNA while still working full time at my factory job. After that time I quit my factory job and started working in a Nursing Home full time and was going to college full time. I had tarsul tunnel in both of my feet, I was told it was from standing on concrete for all those years at my factory job. The doctor was going to operate on one foot and when it healed he was going to do the other foot. He did my LT. foot and he damaged the nerves in my foot that lead to the main nerve in your entire body so, now I can only stand on my foot for a very short period of time. Which in turn damaged my back as well. What I have is know as RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). I ha...Expand for more
ve a battery sewn in my booty, (as my granddaughter would say), that I have to charge about every 3 days for the rest of my life. It's like a pasemaker but it helps controls my pain. Sometimes it takes the edge off the pain and sometimes not. To make a long story short I was on my way of becoming an RN and that put a halt to that. I love to take care of people. Me & Jim moved my mother to our house during that time & took care of her, (after my father died December 2004) during that time I was going to school & working full time. My mother died Fathers Day 2005. And I'm glad I had that time with her I wouldn't change a thing. It beat us down but it was time u can't replace. I was mad at God for a long time. Because both my parents suffered for a very long time. But , I'm right with God now. I love to read and a big part of thats the bible. But, I don't believe in pushing religion on to other people. I'm disable now and Jim helps me out so much, I think god everyday for Jim. On the brighter side I get to see my granddaughter almost everyday. She is my oldest sons daughter. She will be 6 on the 4th of July. My youngest son has been married for 3 1/2 years and so far no children. (If I knew grandchildren where this great I would have started with them first) LOL. A lot of people wouldn't want my life but, it's made me realize how great life is and don't take it for granite. Because life is really short.
