Barbara's Story
Life
After OHS, I spent 2 years at Hanover College and then transferred to NIU. I graduated from Northern with a B.S. in Education, major Spanish, minor Portuguese. I worked in VISTA in Washington State for 1 year and in Salt Lake City for 6 months. I left the US for 18 months by going to Japan and teaching English to Japanese businessmen. Then came a stint at UCLA, a few years more in LA, marriage to a Brazilian, 1 son born in LA, 1 born in Salt Lake, move back to Ottawa for a while, then Princeton, and Macomb. My husband was supposed to study at WIU, but ...Expand for more
he ended up leaving us and school. I got a 2nd Bachelor's in Business and also took some ESL classes. I taught Spanish part-time at Macomb High School while at WIU. In 1993 I moved with my sons to Houston, Texas where I have been teaching Spanish at Alief Hastings High School ever since. I remarried in February 2001, and now have a 23-year-old son and a 21-year-old son (mine, not his) and a 1 1/2 year-old grandson (again mine). I moved to Houston because Lani Taggart said I should come visit. I did, and I stayed. However, I'm still a Midwesterner at heart!
