Barbara's Story

10/11/2008 Last edit on 3/21/2021 Good Grief, Charlie Brown, can it really be 67 yrs since DHS? So much has changed. I was thinking of those days and for some reason thought about our student parking area compared to the huge student parking *lots* these days. Here in NC, most students have cars. I remember DHS days fondly as we were blessed to be growing up at a great time, although we were totally oblivious to it. No drugs, few drop-outs, relatively low crime. We could walk around in my Riverdale neighborhood at night without concern. I am so glad I lived in the "Happy Days" that were the 50's. ... but there were those bomb shelters!! Once I left Dedham, I never looked back. I graduated from 3yr Nursing School in New York '61, married my soul mate in '60 (also a nursing student) I met there, and had 3 great kids. My spouse and I went on to become Nurse Anesthetists and we lived most of the time in Alabama where we raised our 3 kids on a big lake. Linda. our oldest, is a PharmD, married with 1 child who just had a little girl, so now I am a Great Grandmother ... YUK! Linda works at local Hosp. Our son, Bob left his job as a planner at Cat to work for Brunswick Div, building boats in Wilmington. NC ..his dream job. He was married to a Duke Lifeflight nurse he met in college. She was tragically killed when her chopper went down during a mission.on 9/08/2017. I loved her dearly. Jean Marie is an accountant with 3 kids, married to a Fireman. We moved to NC, spouses' birth place, in '86...Expand for more
to look after his aging parents. I retired from Anesthesia in '99 when Jean Marie had twins. She lives next door and it has been so sweet to watch the Grandkids grow. I lost DH in 2005 and my life has changed drastically. Grief like this is daunting, but life goes on, just much quieter since then. If anyone remembers my Mom, she lived to be 100, sharp as a tack and active to the very end! She passed in '98 here in NC Mine was not a very eventful life, my name won't be in any history books, but a good one, I feel. My nursing profession was most rewarding, but my best accomplishments are my kids... I am so proud of all of them. They are good, decent, people that I like to hang with when I can. When things get tough, as I fear they may well in the next year, with the economy in such a mess, it is nice to know we are all close. I won't be at the reunion as I found I don't like to travel alone since DH passed. Hope all who attend have a wonderful time ... I'll be thinking of you. I'd post a pic if they didn't all make me look so much older than I feel!! If I find one I like, I'll post it. Sunday 2/7/21- Just celebrated my 80th Birthday on 1/30 ... boy that's a big number. Grateful to have survived this long. Just got my 2nd shot of the Phizer vaccine on Friday and feel fine. Still live in my own house and doing well. My 3 kids are close by and keep a watchful eye on me. If any of you guys read this, give me a shout as I would love to hear from you. Barbara Strum Sollinger Class of '58
