barney's Story
After high school, I worked at Skinners macaroni for three years and then started an apprenticeship with Sprinkler Fitters Local 669 of the United Association. Finishing a five year apprenticeship in four years I became a journeyman and then foreman running jobs all over the United States. In 1996 I became an instructor for the apprentices in the Omaha area and in 2000 I was chosen to be the Business Agent and Organizer for Iowa and Nebraska. I was elected to that position twice before taking early retirement in 2009. In 2012 I was elected Mayor of Dunlap, Iowa as a write in candidate winning with nearly 75% of the vote. My wife Betty retired in April of 2014 after 40 years in the banking business.
As a part-time employee, something to keep busy, I work on repairing small appliances and going on deliveries for my nephew in his TV and appliance business. nd surgeries cut that part of my life short.
Dunlap, Iowa is my dad's home town with a population of 1050 and most of the Murphy family moved here in 1976 and purchased a bar and café. After Dad's passing the bar was sold to what is now the place where I work.
I enjoy golfing (belonging to two golf courses), watching quiz shows and politics. I wrote a bill that became Iowa law in 2008 and am a registered lobbyist. I have helped several Democrats in their campaigns for office and myself ran for the Iowa House.
I had a battle with cancer and have been cancer free for 10 years. Outside of the health scare, life has been very good during my working career and even better in retirement. There have been several high lights and some low lights in my life with these 'Golden Years' being the best.
I hope all my classmates and those that attended Ralston High are enjoying themselves. I could go on and on, reminiscing about the last 40 plus years, however, it is time to cut this bio off.
