Barry's Story
February 2008
I was born in Salt Lake City, UT in 1930. My mother and I moved to San Francisco, CA in 1939. I lived up and down the West Coast, including San Francisco; Watsonville, CA; San Diego, CA; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Tacoma,WA; and Glendale, CA, until my graduation from Glendale High School in 1948.
After high school I spent five years in the military, one year in the U.S. Marine Corps & four years in the U.S.Air Force. In the Marine Corps I was a special weapons instructor in the Advanced Infantry School at Camp Pendleton, California. In the Air Force I began as a jet fighter mechanic in the 27th Fighter Squadron at March Field, in Riverside, California. My squadron was reassigned to George Air Force Base in Victorville, CA briefly on July 14, 1950 and then to Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, on August 15, 1950. In 1951 I was reassigned to the 7th Radar Calibration Squadron, where I was a flight engineer on a converted B-29 in which we did electronic testing, research and surveillance in the eastern United States and the Artic region. Part of our work included hurricane research off the coast of Florida and the Carolinas..
Following my Air Force duty I enrolled in San Jose State College (now University) in San Jose, CA, from which I graduated in 1956 with a BA degree in Public Relations. Immediately after graduation I went to work for IBM at its San Jose plant. I held various positions there using my skills learned in college. In 1964 the lure of money took me to the sales field and I joined Xerox Corporation, working, out of the San Francisco office. I rose to the position of Federal Government Marketing Manager and left in 1970 to take a sales job with Motorola Corporation in Foster City, CA.

rola I worked at several jobs, including two with small start-up electronics firms in Santa Clara County, CA, before it became known as Silicon Valley.
In 1975 my second wife and I, along with our five year old son, moved to Irvine, CA in Orange County. After a brief period of time with Saxon Business Products I joined the mortgage banking and brokerage industry. I worked for several different firms until 1988, when I had the first of several mini-strokes. On my doctors recommendation in 1990 I retreated from high stress work and into semi-retirement, where did consulting work until 1999 when I had a heart attack, and fully retired in 2000. It was time, I was 70 years old, and although I wanted to continue, it was important for my family that I do it.
That year we moved to Stockton, CA to be closer to four of our children who all live in, or near, the San Francicssco Bay Area. We also have one son, and his family, who lives near Seattle, WA.
In all we have five children; three of mine, one of hers and one of ours. Through them we have nine grandchildren ranging in age fron nine months to thirty one years old. We also have one thirteen year old great gransdaughter.
We love being retired. We enjoy traveling; Japan, New Orleans (before Katrina), New England, Victoria B.C., Mexico, Washington State, Las Vegas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and locally around the Gold Country of Callifornia. We also occasionally return to Southern California to visit family and friends accumulated after 25 years in Irvine. We read. I write. Among my writings is a monthly internt column entitled, "Of Cabbages & Kings." I am also a photographer. We enjoy visiting museums and galleries. We really enjoy each other. It doesn't get much better than this!
