Barry 's Story

Life Yes, life is wonderful and I've been blessed to have many opportunities to enjoy and remember. Some to share and others I hold private. After I graduated in the summer of seventy-two I came home to Lewistown Pa. and experienced the aftermath of Hurricane Agnes and the damage she brought. 2500 people out of work, from Friday to Monday and I found employment. Debts Co., building trailors to haul fiber glass fuel tanks built for gasoline stations. Hey, it's a job. The following April, I started a two and a half journey in the Peace Corps, Barbados West Indies. Teaching General Science on a Junior Hgh level in a new building, with nothing inside. My background at Lea College and Dr. Gier prepared me well as I proceeded to beg, borrow and build supplies to fill the class room and lab. As is it's purpose, I learned as much as I taught, I learned to scuba dive and shared speciemens with my kids. Mr. Wizzard inspired me as a kid and I brought that same flare into the classroom. My kids rewarded me with an 85% pass rate, way above the 15% that was the norm. Two and a half years in paradise, my mother wanted me home or I would have gone to LeSota South Africa. Life brought South Africa to me instead. Ask me about that! Back to Pa. I interviewed for a position and was hired on the spot. I became the plant engineer as such for D K Hostetler Inc. Pallats for New Holland, a farm equipment company, wooden truck bodies which were popular with farmers and State maintaince districts and flooring for the trucking industry were our products and my job was to keep the plan...Expand for more
t running and fix any mechanical problems that developed. After three years here and frustrations with no growth in finances I went out on my own. I became an upholster, a furniture refinisher and a TV repairman. I married my first wife, had a lovely daughter, Johanna and along the way became a volunteer fire fighter. Bought my first home for $7500! It was a rehab job, relax. Busy but not making any money still. So, after two years or so I hired on to Metro North Commuter Railroad in December of 84. I've been there ever since, Commuting back and forth. Along the way I lost my first wife through divorce. Nine years later, in 2000 I met Bobbi, a high school sweet heart , I was lucky enough to have a second chance. I started out as a telephone maintainer and eventually obtained a radio license. I repair and maintain communications for the railroad that moves half a million people in and out of New York city daily. I'm in my nitch now. Did I mention my call sign KB3LFP, Advanced class ham radio operator. My home away from home is in Bridgeport CT.. Stamford CT. is where I'm head quartered and will most likely retire. I'm the Sectrary Treasury for the IBEW local 859 and very active in contract negociations for nearly 3500 employees. ( It's now 2011 and I was elected president of our local, four years ago) Survived prostate cancer and am looking forward to retirement in about a year or so. Lea College opened lots of doors. I've shared some of those with you here. Thanks to everyone who touched my life and there's still more to come, Lord willing.
