Barry's Story
Ok I have decided to document my story. It started in 1958 in a small all black and historic suburb of Cincinnati called Lincoln Heights. In my early formative years I attended an all black private school called St. Simons, with uniforms and all. Well some time in 1967 my mother decided that she was not happy with my father and she packed up our things headed us for Canada so that we could attend school year round. My dear sweet mother jumped on I-75 northbound and made it as far as the Gem City, Dayton, Ohio. We lived on the west side and the first school I attended was Carlson on Gettysburg. Talk about a culture shock! The only school clothes that I owned were uniforms. So needless to say my first day of school at Carlson was eventful. All of the kids were teasing me and caling me Sidney Poitier. I even got my butt kicked by one of the kids after school and I ran home crying to my mother. Well she kicked my butt for getting my butt kicked and told me to go back to school and handle my business with the lil boy who kicked my butt. Well needless to say that lil boy got the butt kicking of his life and that day I got the reputation of being the school bully. Well we moved to the Joy Apartments and my mother transferred me to Highview Elementary. Several years later we moved again and I was transferred to Wogoman Elementary. Seems like an early nomadic existence huh? Well all of that moving and meeting new friends contributed to the development of my extroverted right brain current personality. Later on that year I was a neighborhood celebrity. I was riding down the street on my bike. I decided to do a wheelie. As I was going down the street I did not see the RTA at the intersection. Within seconds the day turned to night. I was run over by the bus. It was not my time to go because the bus ran over me length wise and I was untouched. The neighbors were holding their breath. All of a sudden I stood up brushed myself off and started to ride again. Mrs. Barnes, Doug Barnes's mother ran outside and into the street with a belt and gave me a serious butt whipping. She took me in the house and called my mother. My mother arrived and gave me a another butt whipping all the way home. To this day she still tells people about the time I got ran over by the RTA. Getting back to Wogoman Elementary. I was in I believe the seventh grade and I was invited to my first basement party with girls!!! Oh boy! I got the chance to kiss my first girl, Vanessa Martin. Wow that was the beginning of a new era for me. When Vanessa stuck her tongue in my mouth it was like a lightning bolt hit me. Later on that year our school had an end of the year trip to Philadelphia. You should have seen the gold jumpsuit my mother made for me. You could not tell me that I was not Superfly. After the long bus ride to Philly, all was going well then one day we all got together and decided to take a walk downtown and go shopping. As we were walking down the street, my best friend at the time (Brian Alford), Robert Cartwright and I decided to stop in a music store to look at some guitars. For some reason we thought the rest of the class had stopped outside and were waiting for us. Well when we finished our shopping and walked outside, the class was gone. We did not panic. We continued shopping and bought gifts for our mother's and returned to the hotel. When we got back the class had not returned so we went to our rooms and relaxed. When the class returned the male chaperone was furious! He will remain nameless because he was a flaming sissy boy and really should not have gotten as upset as he did. He bought us plane tickets back to the Gem City on TWA. That happened to be my first plane ride...YIPPE!!!! It also got me a butt whipping with a baseball bat (I was too big and strong for a belt according to mama). We moved again to Dayton View! Those of us that had parents that wanted to get us out of the hood decided to move to Dayton View. Just think how much of a dynasty Dayton Dunbar would have been if we all had stayed on the Westside and attended Dunbar. Well now I am attending Cornell Heights Middle School. I was faced with a dilemma. Join the Chains of Rap Brown aka The Little Raps or get my butt kicked on a regular basis. I chose to join. Blain Walker (R.I.P) told me where to meet for my initiation. It was behind Jefferson Elementary. I was given the choice of going down a beltline or boxing one of the enforcers or senior members. I chose to box and Robert Miles was the enforcer who was assigned to box me. My skills were a lil quicker and harder than his so I got the best of him and I was allowed to join. The Chains got involved in some illegal activities the details of which I will not disclose. I decided that I bet...Expand for more
ter quit or else. I spread the word that I was out. Later on that day Ronald Peoples and Blaine Walker were walking down my street to give me the going away ass kicking that you received when you decided to quit. I was at home looking out my door scared to death not knowing what they were about to do to me. They knocked on my door and I was afraid to answer. All of a sudden, my lil sister Tanya Johnson, grabbed the door handle, snatched open the door and shouted "Yall better get away from my house! Yall ain't gonna touch my brother!" Well they were not ready to deal with a lil skinny loud black girl so they turned around and left. A few days later Terry Stewart, a promising young sophomore basketball player was shot and killed on Lexington Ave. Days later the Chains disbanded and were no more. So my baby sister saved me from that butt whupping. 1972 was a turbulent year at Colonel White High School and that would be the school that I attended as a freshman. During the late 60's 70 and 71 racial turmoil was at its peak and black students were brutalized. As a young freshman in 1972 I was afraid to go to school. That summer at Princeton park I tried out for football. Myself, John Smith, Darryl France and Reggie Oglesby practiced with the varsity as freshman. The notoriety and respect that we received from the varsity players sort of blended over and throughout the student body and for the first year then in 1972, Colonel White was peaceful. There was a minor hicc-up in 1973. One of the brothas in the school had an issue with his girlfriend and within a number of days, the female gang, The Glory Stompers showed up after school and whupped his ass. Out of respect for him I will not name him...LOL. Our freshman year in football we were coached by Coach John Cooley and we were undefeated. Towards the end of the year we dressed varsity for the Colonel White vs. Roosevelt game. John, Reggie, France and I were standing at the end of the bench freezing because we had not had the opportunity to play. Roosevelt was kicking Big Waggoner, Chuck Kidd, Art Green, Walt Lee, Bip Mclemore, Larry Walker, Albert Scudder, Derrick Parker, and Gerald Hammock's ass. The score I believe was 66-0. On the ride home from Welcome stadium most of the team was hurt and disappointed. Uncle Bob was quietly at the back of the bus making jokes about how bad we had got our butts kicked. He was imitating Coach Hassel. Coach Hassel always used to say "Art Green knows how it is to be winner". Uncle Bob was saying "yeah tonight Art found out how it feels to get his ass kicked". I believe either Fred Yarborough (R.I.P), or Walt Lee rushed back to the bus to silence Uncle Bob and it was on! I will not tell you who the winner was. The next football season we had the clash of the titans at Princeton park during practice. Hard hitting Walt Lee and all state wrestling champion Art Green got into a fight. It was on! We all circled the two of them like it was a prize fight. Walt was like Ali and Art was like Jack Johnson. You just knew it was gonna be a fight to end all fight. Out of nowhere Richard "Wolfman" Owings, grabbed Art from behind and Walt tagged Art in the right eye. It swole up immediately. All you could hear Art saying using the southern drawl that he had was "Thats f-ed up Lee thats f-ed up Wolfman. Shortly after that the coaches broke it up and it was over. They never got the chance to finish the battle. That year we played Dayton Dunbar. They were undefeated and only had in the neighborhood of 20 total points score on them. They were rated either number 1 or 2 in the state. We were slated to be slaughtered. They had a big full back named Early who was a freight train. During the second quarter Big Early broke free on a 32 ice and was headed for the end zone. All that was between him and scoring was a young sophomore named Steve Williams. Steve was 6' and probably 150 with three rocks in his pocket. Steve hit big Early and put him out of the game! We ran a double end around reverse pass and scored and shocked the mighty Wolverines! We beat them 8-6. Later during my senior year we played Jefferson Township. They were 66-0 and had not lost a game in 6-7 years. We played them on their home field and it happened to be their homecoming game. We beat them 32-12. At the end of the game we celebrated shook hands with the opposing team and walked back to our bus. Little did we know after we left the school, our band did a victory march up Jefferson's field. The Jefferson band did a march from the opposite direction and trampled our band. They destroyed their uniforms and instruments. Jefferson had to cut our school a check to cover the replacement of the uniforms and the instruments...
