Barry's Story

Hello out there!! Not sure if anybody would remember me, but honored to have you visit! After Grant, I attended LAVC, where I became active in student government, forensics, and political activism; managed to win a few competitive speech events and was on the LAVC Monarch Speech squad that took the top prize at Nationals in Chicago in 1976. During those years '74-'76 I also served in LAVC student gov't., and as Pres. of the LAVC Young Democrats. Completed an AA in Speech and Journalism, transferred to UC Santa Cruz, there becoming involved in Theater and Film production. My shift in interests brought me back to the Valley to work on some local film projects with friends. Worked in the family business while continuing part-time evening studies at CSUN, also continuing to work on songwriting and fiction writing; In 1980 I became a feature writer and Managing Editor for several magazines in the Rona Barrett Hollywood group of gossip rags. After they were bought out by the Toronto Star/Harlequin Books I found myself out of work, married with a baby on the way, and in search of a bread-and-butter steady job. This led to stints in graphics, phototypesetting work, real estate/property management, and sales, eventually landing at the old Bendix plant in North Hollywood in 1984. From there I built a professional career in the Purchasing fi...Expand for more
eld, completing a B.S. in Business Management and other professional certifications along the way. My marriage ended in 1992. As a single parent I raised three wonderful kids... What am I saying? I have 3 daughters who are all now fully grown adults (holy cow, time really does fly!), and recently became a grandfather for the first time. I've been in the procurement field for over 25 years. I am a believer in lifelong learning, and even at this point in time considering going after a graduate degree. Thanks for reading all this. I was pretty much a loner and extremely shy back in High School. My best friend at school in those days was Les Hartzman; we used to meet and play chess almost every day at lunch time on a bench in that walkway near the Grant library. For 3 years we did that. I can't believe it now when I look back, I guess I was aspiring to be a nerd?.. Outside of school I was a different person, a lot less uptight than I felt at school, and more outgoing. I played a bit of guitar and piano, meddled with songwriting, worked in local political campaigns, did quite a bit of photography back then. Thanks again for reading through all this self-centered rambling... I would love to hear from anyone who's interested, you can email me here or at silvermanbc at msn dot com, or call me at 818 912 2163. Best regards, Barry
