Rebecca's Story

Hello! After high school, I went to Bay De Noc for my LPN degree. Lori Schultz and I lived there together for a year. We had a blast. It was lots of hard work, but we managed to pull through. After Bay, Lori and I lived together again and I went to work at Bell Memorial. I worked in Pediatrics for four years. I met my husband during that time and, after dating for two years, we were married on 9-16-83. Two days after we were married, we moved to Haslett, Michigan, near East Lansing, so Brian could go to MSU for his geology degree and his teaching certificate. I worked as a nurse for a pediatrician for a year and then four years for an ear, nose and throat physician. Brian had been laid off before we were married and when they called him in the fall of 1988, we jumped at the chance to move back to the UP. After that, I went back to school for my RN at Northern. I nearly finished, when I became pregnant. I had my oldest son, Travis, on March 8, 1990. I went back to school, but I became pregnant again and had my youngest son, Connor, on July 10, 1991. No more school after that! I was a stay at home mom until Connor was in Kindergarten and then I began doing medical transcription. I typed full-time for seven years. My life really changed on January 3, 2005. After two weeks of abdominal pain, I had surgery to remove a mass in my abdomen, which turned out to be lymphoma. I had a tumor wrapped around (and inseparable from) the blood vessels supplying my lower leg. My leg swelled up right away. I was diagnosed with Stage III B-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and given a 50-60% survival rate after five years, with Stage I being the most survivable and Stage IV the least. What a shocker that was! After my first chemo, my leg just went downhill and I ended up having my right leg amputated below the knee, which is something I was prepared for by then. After six rounds of chemo, I was considered cured! However, I got MRSA, but not a severe cas...Expand for more
e, and had to have two more surgeries to remove dead muscle, sorry for being gross, from my stump. Then two more surgeries to close up my incision. I finally got my temporary prosthesis two days short of one year from my amputation. What a happy day! After physical therapy, I finally got to walk. No picnic though, I hated that thing, imagine walking with a stiff ankle all the time. I got my permanent prosthesis in September of 2006. I had a semi-ankle again! It has a carbon fiber foot that can bend, so I have a foot that bends when I walk. Really cool. Not perfect mind you, I'm still limited, but I walk now and don't even think about it. I even got my prosthesis covered with a pink design! Of course, that was the condensed version, and I'm sorry to go on and on, but I wanted you to understand what happened. All told, I spent 15 months in a hospital bed in my livingroom. Thank God I had my family to take care of me. I'm on disability now. I can't stand for a long time and have trouble sitting upright for a long time, but I manage to get things done. My boys are really happy they don't have to clean or do laundry anymore! I have been the catcher for the Class of 1978 softball team now two years in a row. What a blast. Of course, the umpire has to help me, but I don't do too bad of a job. I'm still in remission. My three year anniversary (last chemo) is coming up on April 26, 2008. Only two more to go. Brian drives the big production trucks at the Tilden. We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in 2008. Our sons are grown now. Travis is a senior at Ishpeming and will be going to MTU for an engineering degree. He gets all A's, something his mother never did! Connor is a sophomore at Ishpeming. He loves to play football and run track. He is 6'3" and makes his mother feel very short. They are both wonderful kids. Well, that's it. If you happen to read this, send me an e-mail. I would love to hear from you. Take care!
