Ben's Story

Life After graduation, I took a year off to clear the fog. Our counselor at the time said I'd never make it in college, so I had to figure out what to do with myself. Good jobs were few and far between at the time so I said, "What the heck. Let's try WVU on for size!" During my years in Morgantown, I became a different person. As a member of the Forestry club, secretary for the Society of American Foresters and Woodsmen Team (Lumberjack Sports) Captain / Competitor, I found that I enjoyed taking on the role of a leader. However,in September of 1998, I experienced the 2nd biggest change of my life. I met the girl who would become my wife. Brigitte Kumbier, of Bel Air, MD, was a Forestry student at Virginia Tech. By the end of the semester, our relationship grew and Brigitte had transferred to WVU. We graduated in May of 2001 with our B.S. degrees in Forest Resource Management and moved to Blacksburg, VA, where I worked for Bartlett Tree Experts. I decided that job ripped so I began a research position with the Virginia Dept. of Forestry. During this time my wife earned her M.S. in Wood Science/Marketing. By summer of '03 we had moved to Montezuma, Georgia. I was the forester for Oak Crest Lumber, while Brigitte, began a carrer with Weyerhaeuser Corporation. t products, and headquartered out of Federal Way, WA. We had only been there 10 months, when Brigitte was offered a transfer, and I was offered a position in the Arkansas/Oklahoma Timberlands region with Weyerhaeuser. While she is mapping and planning, I am managing the harvesting operations on company land. We are part of a team that manage nearly 2 million acres of company land in Arkansas and Southeast Oklahoma alone. Believe it or not, they have some mighty big hills here! We experienced another milestone in our lives on the 26th of April, when my daughter, Virginia (Gini) Leigh was born. She is perfect in every way and we have been blessed greatly! We have enjoyed everywhere God has placed us. We have met many interesting people, and have called some very interesting places home. However, we are glad to announce that we are moving much closer to home soon! I am proud to announce that we are relocating to Virginia (about 10 miles South of Clifton Forge)! As of this August, we will have moved into OUR house (we finally bought one, so we have to settle down)! Brigitte will be starting her new position as Department Head and Professor of Forestry at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College(they have a 2 year program)and I will start my new job at North Fork Lumber as their new Progect Manager. Look us up if you're ever in the area! Take care all.
