Ben's Story
Life has been... a roller coaster! Not that I believe I am the only that has to go through similar situations.
After getting outta high school vocational schools were my thing, I believe I was a car-freak from the day I was born. Tried to become a mechanic or something automotive. But a huge wall stopped me. Epileptic seizures.
Back in 2001 after going through doctor after doctor saying I was the reason my seizures were not under control. I was taking enough medications for a 1200 lb person! Way more than a 200 lb person should need. It was obvious that the system did not want to spend the money it would cost to take care of the problem, although it was costing them upwards of $30k a year for my prescriptions alone!
I finally got sent to a doctor that saw it from my point of view and realized that medications were not the answer. My mom had taken me to this appointment 'cuz I was legally not able to get a license. He then said, "What do you think about brain surgery in your temporal lobe?". He asked me to think about it... He did not even make it to the door before I said yes. Well it was not something they did right there in the office, so I was given time to think about it while th...Expand for more
e appointment for the surgery was setup.
The time finally came for the surgery had finally come, everyone in the family asked to make sure I was willing to chance my life on something like this. The way my life was going at that point I was feeling it was about at its end, so there was no hesitation on my part.
The surgery was finally performed and I should have been released from ICU w/in 3 days. Due to some complications I was held for 10 days. I guess I was using some pretty foul language to the people takin' care of me. I don't remember so maybe that is what my mom just wants me to believe, just kidding mom! Pain from the headache I had was 100x worse than anything I have ever felt... and it lasted 4 weeks!
Normally you are told to wait 1 year after a procedure like this to get your license, but my doctor said it was obvious it was working since I had gone to about 15% of the meds I was taking before the surgery. He told me he would be filling out the forms and sending them to the DMV for me to get my license! I don't think my feet even touched the ground for the next week or so! After I passed the tests I was given my temporary license and it has not left my possession since then.
